If anything GoDawgs, it tasted better than it looks in this year of unseasonally high rainfall, something else that also tasted delicious last night was the first of KarenO's Midnight Sun's. Second one is on the bench, its ripening is eagerly awaited.

First up for those who have not seen it, two different angles
Midnight Sun (6).JPG
Midnight Sun (7).JPG
cut in half
Midnight Sun (13).JPG
and in quarters, the best way to show off its internal colours

This one weighed 400 grams when picked at blush

and its imperial equivalent, in ounces

Just glad I am not growing this one to save seed of commercially, would take a lot of fruit to get a commercial quantity of seed out of them.

Yes it’s a stingy one for seeds, but that’s why it’s so smooth and luscious ;)
Seed seller friends sold out of it pretty early. Growing more this year to make up for it :)

Nice, but not exceptional, the smaller one has more appeal than the larger. Considering the amount of rain and how much some of the repeat growers are down on flavour in comparison to last year, acceptable. Not sure if you have grown the KARMA's, but would take KARMA Pink over the larger one, cannot really compare the smaller one as plant pulled a week or so back, something had scraped outer layer of bark off stem at ground level. Would take smaller over larger for taste and appearance when cut. Larger one is producing a mix of fruit typical of saladettes with 3 or 4 seed cavities and some mini beefsteaks with 7 or 8 cavities

First step taken today in the expansion of the main vege bed, a number of plum trees pulled out and added to the burn pile and loads of last years mulch moved and added into one big pile, hopefully all the cooch grass within will rot rather than shoot. Plums were ones that we planted about 10 years ago, either flowering too early for the area and having blossom burnt off by the cold winds, or they were not well liked by the kids so no point keeping the trees when the area can be better utilised. Will go close to quadrupling the size of vege bed.

Started planting the Autumn sowing of Snow and Snap peas today. Ground prepped and some Joni's Taxi got sown. Will be planting Heather, Cascadia, Mammoth Melting and Yakumo Giant. Only a few of each at this stage, need to get that extension done for more. Anyone heard of a variety of Snowpea called Speckled? Found it at Eden seeds when I was checking spelling just now.

No, haven’t heard of Speckled, unless it’s marketed under a different name in the US.

Really enjoying the pics. Thanks for posting. Bigger garden? Sounds like an excellent plan!

Next round of pics, lets start with the bigger garden, area to be converted is roughly 25 x 14 m, translates into something in the region of 3800 - 3900 sq feet
Vege bed expansion (2).JPG

Vege bed expansion (3).JPG
Will be leaving sufficient room between bed and apple tree on right to run mower through and butting bed up against existing bed on left, going back from drain to drive. Bed behind plastic pallets (saffron in foam boxes and large pots) will be extended, currently has native lilies in it to draw in pollinators, will also wind up with herbs in there.

Picked the first Captain Lucky a couple of days ago, Understand why KarenO has picked it as a parent. Good but not as good as a couple of its offspring.

Bowerbird's Yellow is the name I have given to the Dwarf that came out of the Low Acid Yellow intermediate sold commercially locally. These are solid, meaty, delicious fruit that I will often pick and eat straight off the plant. Two fruit pictured. The second one made it inside for a mug shot before being eaten. They seem to be stable at around the size pictured, which is considerably larger than the parent, which I am sure was posted on TV. seed will be available shortly if anyone interested.

Duncan's Dutch Pear, on from Mcsee, for those of you who are aware of him from TV. One of the large Italian sauce/paste types that is very meaty with very few seeds, this fruit would have been in the house for two weeks before being cut. Definitely back next year. Weighs roughly 10.5 oz.

High praise indeed, a wonderful tomato and one of y all time favourites. It turned out to be a fantastic choice as parent imparting some of its wonderful characteristics and combining so well with the female parents I used, also each excellent tomatoes in their own right.

Rajun, typically around 30 to 40 from memory, a lot of my plants are down in production numbers, but not fruit size, this year with the crazy season we have had. PM me your address and some will be on there way.

Have forgotten to mention that the parent was a typical supermarket size fruit, around 5 to 5.5 oz, and one year picked from mid January into June here.
