karstopography--- What is that red ear fish you have on the previous page ? I spent sometime goggling through pictures. I never could determine if it was some hybrid crappie, or sunfish. Ever what it is--I don't have.

Re: Fishing thread
We call those shell crackers and they are also known as red-eared sunfish. They get a little drab in winter cold water.

Re: Fishing thread
I thought it might be a cracker, but yours was void of any of those colors that is displayed in the gov link. No yellowish belly or bottom fin.
I rarely ever catch them. PS-- I got a lot of respect for the ole fly fishermen. A fishing tool I sux at using. LOL

Re: Fishing thread
The sunfish like bluegills and the redears seem to lose their color in winter cold water here. Even the largemouth bass get pretty pale in winter. They all brighten and color up in the spring. The water is probably only 55 degrees or so now, probably never gets below 50 degrees for any length of time here, but they feel so cold when I catch them. This lake isn’t very tannic and the fish all tend to be pretty light in color year around as compared to darkly colored fish from a highly tannic waterbody.

They are tuna, amberjack and maybe dentex

Re: Fishing thread
Finally have safe ice here. Will be drilling a few holes and fishing wood and weed edges for crappie.
Post #131 with that female redear is a beauty. Redear here, are meat eaters, and relate to the bottom more than other panfish. When fishing brush and blowdowns we always rig one tightline and fish the bottom with a chunk of crawler.
Thanks for the pics. Good stuff.

Re: Fishing thread
I was looking to see if the largemouth bass were up shallow when the crappie took one of these deer hair divers. I don’t get a lot of crappie up near the surface of the water.

Fuzzy things! They probably look like mini muskrats in the water. I see you do a lot of fly fishing, do you make them yourself?

Re: Fishing thread
ddsack Yes, Dahlberg diver is another name for them and there’s plenty of variations on materials and color. A couple of grizzly hackle, a clump of marabou, and some spun deer body or belly hair, trimmed is my take on them. They work great on largemouth bass once those move up shallow, unusual to get any crappie on them.
