Re: Patti's 2022 'Mater Adventure
Rawlings - A potato leafed, pink heart. (Edit to say that only Tfest says it's a heart, it was given to SSC as a beefsteak)
This plant is growing at a friends. The tomato that I was given is more beefsteak than heart so I will have to go verify that this is growing true to type.
I am editing this post to say that I confirmed with Terry at Secret Seed Cartel that Rawlings is supposed to be a beefsteak. Tfest lists this as a heart, which this is not. Terry received hers directly from Jim Wyant and beefsteaks are what they are producing. My seeds came from Terry. So seeds of this will be sent to the MMMM and listed as Rawlings.

Update - I edited the Rawlings post. I have verified with Terry at Secret Seed Cartel that this plant is growing true to type and she thinks that it is the correct form.

Nahuelbuta Pink - A regular leafed pink beefsteak. I think it' smore of a semi-indeterminate than an indeterminate.

Nahuelbuta Pink is a beautiful tomato and that is an awesome cluster you have growing on the plant.

Rosedale - Potato leafed purple bred by Bill Jeffers. The same line as Daniel Burson.
Please excuse my fingerprint. The fruit was stuck against the cage.

Rosedale is pretty. I've got Daniel Burson plants that are about 3" tall right now, how do the two varieties compare?

Rosedale is a taller plant than Daniel Burson it is also later to ripen. Burson will get to about 5' and Rosedale is currently at about 6". DB often has a belly button and with a nice round shape, Rosedale has an irregular shape. Both tomatoes have this amazing texture that is quite firm yet it seems to melt in your mouth. Rosedale is more acidic than Daniel Burson yet both of them have great flavor. Daniel Burson is a production machine while Rosedale just has above average production.Mark_Thompson wrote: ↑Thu Sep 08, 2022 12:39 pm Rosedale is pretty. These are both well above average tomatoes IMAO.

Thank you for that comparison. I'm going to do DB again as a spring planting instead of the late start it got this year. And it will be joined by Rosedale, the seed of which I got in MMMM this past year.MissS wrote: ↑Thu Sep 08, 2022 1:39 pm Rosedale is a taller plant than Daniel Burson it is also later to ripen. Re: Patti's 2022 'Mater Adventure
Grew both DB and Rosedale this year. DB was super prolific but had problems with BER on Rosedale so lost a lot of potentially great tomatoes. Didn’t like the Earthbox, I guess. Next year will be back to bales but needed to isolate to save seeds. But the few I got were good. Really set a lot of tomatoes in the beginning. Could cry over the initial losses! Then drought and humidity set in! So didn’t set or ripen as well.

Now that I'm further into the season one more difference of note is that Rosedale does not have as long of a shelf life as Daniel Burson. Still are both nice tomatoes but if I could only have one then it would be Burson.GoDawgs wrote: ↑Sun Oct 02, 2022 6:50 amThank you for that comparison. Wow, great pictures and info, love the tomato cages. Are those the type of cage that folds flat for storage?

Re: Patti's 2022 'Mater Adventure
These were all of the "New to Me" tomatoes. There was not a bad one in the group. I was very pleased with my tomatoes this season. The weather was good and the plants all performed pretty well in spite of the drawback of having herbicide in my soil.
Seeds will be sent in to the MMMM or are available from me by request in a PM for a SASE.
Abraham Brown - Had plenty of blossoms but did not set well in heat. It is a late producer and a very very tall plant that needs extra support. It has a nice firm texture. Balanced flavor on the tangy side with a bit of zing. The fruits do not have a long counter top life. This was the largest plant in my garden and gave me the least fruit but still it was average production.
Berg - This was the first plant to set fruit. It was a very nice producer of nice round fruit with very good flavor. The fruits had a complex flavor with a sweet start, a tangy mid profile and a smooth finish. It was wonderful for fresh eating because it was not too acidic on ones stomach.
Blue Ridge Mountain - A good producer of large pink fruits on the late side for me. It had very good flavor and production. It had no disease issues at all. The flavor was smooth, mild, balanced and more on the sweet side. It tasted best with a little salt added.
Costoluto Genovese (Broken Bar's) - A very good producer of ruffled little beefsteaks. The plant lived up to it's reputation of having poor to no flavor that is great for sauce.
Elbonian Puddle Duck - I liked this tomato. It had very good flavor and amazing yields. It was sweet with a subtle zing to it which I liked. It reminded me a lot of German Johnson.
Heatherington Pink - This was a very productive producer of tasty pink fruits. The fruits were very good typical plink flavor on the sweet side. Very balanced between sweet and tart.
Marizol Bratka - I see why Carolyn spoke highly of this one. The plant is very productive. The fruits are large with a bright tangy flavor. They had enough of that old time acidity to leave a tingle where the juice ran down your chin. These make you want to bring a salt shaker out to the garden with you.
Nahuelbuta Pink - This was a very productive pink. The plant has massive amounts of foliage and was the first to succumb to disease. The fruits had very good balanced sweet flavor.
Polish Ellis - A very heavy producer of large pink tomatoes with great old fashioned flavor. I can see why it has stood the test of time.
Ponderosa - This tomato was hit by the herbicide in my soil the hardest. It took forever for it to outgrow the leaf curl. That most likely is due to it being at the back where most of the water would run to. Once it out grew the funk, the plant started blooming and producing nicely. Unfortunately I had very few fruits ripen because it was so late to start. The one that I did taste was very good but I can't rate it on just the first of the fruit. The others I used for seed processing.
Rosedale - This plant had the prime spot in my garden. It had moderate production of very good complex flavored tomatoes. These had a sweet start with a tangy finish and the same great texture as Daniel Burson. These tomatoes had a very short shelf life.
Sakharnyi Pudovichok - A strong producer of large red fruit. The plant was the first plant to show signs of early blight and I thought I would lose it. It recovered nicely without any special intervention from me. Wow what a nice tomato. It's sweet, juicy and all that a tomato should be and I thought that I only liked pinks... Give this on a try.
Sochulak - This tomato was a surprise to me. I started it for a friend. The seed was old and took over a month to germinate. When it came time to deliver the plants this was only about an inch tall so I held it back and am glad that I did. I am not a grower of paste tomatoes because they are bland and tend to get BER in my garden. I stuck this poor little thing in-between my big indeterminates. It got no direct sun but that little plant grew and started producing the only paste shaped tomatoes that I have ever liked. The plant was healthy and without any BER. The tomatoes had such a nice sweet flavor. You can use these for fresh eating as well as for sauce. I want to be trying this little gem again under better growing conditions.
