Re: Woz travelling 2022
Ok, photo time, Day 2 of trip went through a lot of the burnt area from 2019, trees certainly showing effects
As is the nature of a lot of our eucalypts, shooting out from epicormic buds. Photos taken while travelling, dash mount phone holders come in handy.
After stopping at Eden and Merimbula, we stopped at the Tathra wharf, built for loading/unloading sailing ships, only one left intact, time ahs caught up with the others.
Showing the old cattle loading race done up.

Mogo Zoo,
A family favourite, a must stop at when travelling this way. They have had great success with their Giraffe breeding program, this little one was six days old (sorry about the wire, did not realise it was there)
If you want, you can feed the giraffes, become very popular with both visitors and giraffes Kangaroos there have a hard life........ YThe plains mouse was a new to us arrival, in some of the logs were babies, glass made it hard to get a decent shot of them

Built back in 2005, the Seacliff bridge is something we have been aiming to travel on for a while, first a bit of history and story behind the bridge...
Wollongong is one of our bulk carrier ports, plenty of shipping activity noted.

Symbio Wildlife Park had a few animals that we hadn't seen before, along with the usual culprits, very popular with locals and school groups by all accounts, being half way between Sydney and Wollongong.

They also had both our big lilies, Doryanthes excelsior, the Gymea Lily and Doryanthes palmeri growing and flowering, although the cockatoos had got to the palmeri.

Re: Woz travelling 2022
Next was the Australian Reptile Park. Another first time visit for us. well worth going back to. They supply all the snake and spider venom for the antivenin programs that we have going in Australia, with snake milking being part of their show talks. They also imported American Alligators, now have about 50 adults and supply them to other zoos in Oz. They also have a breeding pair of Komodo Dragons, with three hatchlings from last year and the female was carrying eggs again they believe. They take these for walks around the main area of the parks on leads.
One does not fully appreciate the size of a Galapagos tortoise until one sees one in the flesh, they are massive, up around a meter across the shell.

Komodo dragon female was kept shuttered off from sight for the most part, obviously trying to minimize stress while she is carrying eggs.

Re: Woz travelling 2022
Not sure if the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby in the last photo is actually giving birth or not, but considering her (? assuming its a female) pose it is highly likely. Females kangaroos and wallabies have the ability to control pregnancies and when they give birth they young is about the size of a jellybean, crawls from the mothers vulva up through the fur and into her pouch. During this process, the mother licks her fur to keep it moist to help the joey to move through it. This one was actively licking, so the presumption is.....

Re: Woz travelling 2022
The friends we have up around Kempsey we met when I was far more involved in the native Orchid Circuit than I am now. They still had some in flower, although the wet weather was playing havoc with the flower quality, with a lot of fungus on those flowers just under shade cloth rather than a solid roof. Still managed to find a few to photograph plus some ferns and a couple of other things. First a few of the species
Then a couple of named hybrids (I did not write down all the names)

Re: Woz travelling 2022
South West Rocks is a small coastal town that I spent 12 months living in way back in 1991, when we get up that way we drop in to see how it is going and just to have a look about. Developers have gone berserk and town has grown massively since I lived there. Fortunately there are national parks around it saving the natural beauty of the area. One of these places is called Smokey Cape, named so by Captain Cook as he sailed up the east coast due to fires burning in the area. There is a light house on the cliff top, sitting at 125 meters, about 415 feet above sea level. To get to it is a steep climb up from about 5 meters/ 15 feet over about 1.6 km/1 mile roughly. A hard grind on a pushbike, but I did it a number of times back then, often hard on the brakes behind cars trying not to overtake them going down hill.

Re: Woz travelling 2022
Then it was off to Echuca and a paddle steamer ride, a different one from last year. This time on the longest serving tourist boat, converted to serve the tourist trade at the end of WW2. The Murray river was in minor flood status when we were there, pushing into the treed areas along the banks. Where we had to walk last year to board the paddle steamer was well under water, with around 3m/10ft over water over the landing. Could have been more, I need to look back at last years photos to compare.
One thing that we have noticed becoming more common across a lot of highways and other busy roads or high traffic areas is aerial Possum bridges. These allow our native arboreal animals to safely cross roads without getting killed or causing other problems.
These are basically large poles that are joined by netting (in photo above, going under a new bridge over a large carpark for the many river house boats based at Echuca. Poles are braced by anchoring cables which keep tension on the netting and are connected to trees by 3 or 4 ropes to allow access. There is often a length of PVC to serve as an emergency hollow if needed. In situations where these are located over highways, there is a mesh fence running down the side of the highway with the top of the supporting posts being bent at 45 degrees away from the road. the mesh extends roughly 2 feet/ 0.5m past the top of the posts so that it sags down if an animal is climbing the mesh.
