Yes, I am growing Gardener's Sweetheart this year, I believe from your seeds from the MMMM. Looking forward to it!Toomanymatoes wrote: ↑Wed Jun 28, 2023 10:01 pm
Well, now I know what cherry tomatoes I am going to try next season.
My favorites so far have been Gardener's Sweetheart (I love oxhearts and it is basically a cherry version) and Green Doctor's Frosted. Sweet Aperitif was quite good too.
Too many tomatoes, not enough time.

Re: Favorite Cherry Tomato 2023
One of my neighbors dries almost all of the Juliet F1 she grows, and raves about it as "tomato candy." Just slices them in half and puts them out in the sun on a baking sheet. Says that no insect touches them because the baking sheet is so hot in the sun! I think that's the main way her daughter and grandsons eat tomatoes! I may try it this year.karstopography wrote: ↑Tue Jun 27, 2023 6:32 pm ...Next season, I will shift my cherry/grape tomatoes growing efforts to reflect an increasing desire for dried tomatoes. ...
I grew Black Vernissage (or Pink?) one year and it was the best dried tomato! It tasted like pizza sauce although nothing was added to it.

Re: Favorite Cherry Tomato 2023
For several years, my favorite cherry tomato was Tommy Toe. Big-tomato flavor in a cherry. But I haven't grown it for several years. I've been trying to find a cherry that does well in this scorching-inferno-summer climate I've lived in for the past 5 years.
Green Bee F1 was fun to grow for a couple years. It's crunchy-when-ripe and has a long shelf life, and does not fall apart when cooked.

I'm under the assumption that you've tried SunGold in all of its color stages. Many try it when it is sort of a yellow/gold, just after the green is gone. It is much sweeter when it gets to a gold/orange color.Josetom wrote: ↑Tue Jun 27, 2023 7:34 pmNot enough sweet, not enough unique flavor to justify all the effort in growing it.. my wife always teases me "Looks different, but it takes just like a tomato" haha well, she noticed a difference in SunGold and Super Sweet 100 though..Seven Bends wrote: ↑Tue Jun 27, 2023 7:10 pm What are you looking for in a cherry tomato? You've grown several of the varieties that are commonly listed as the best, so it would be helpful to know what you did and didn't like about those, or what you're hoping for instead. Didn't like the taste? Too sweet, not sweet enough, too fruity, too bland, too tart, want them to taste more like old-fashioned tomatoes? Poor production? Not the right size? Too crunchy, too mushy, too juicy, too many seeds? Want thinner skins, thicker skins, less splitting, longer shelf life? Fancier/prettier/more unusual appearance? Etc.
Some of the ones I've liked that aren't on your list: Dikovinka, Rosella, Garnet, Super Snow White, and Braveheart. I'm trying Pink Princess, Der Kleine Doctor, and Fruit Punch for the first time this year and expect to try Honeydrop (Honey Drop), Medovaya Kaplya, and Japanese Pink Cherry next year.
I'm a huge fan of Sungold and grow two plants of it every year. Maybe try Sun Sugar if you haven't already. I prefer Sungold, but some people like Sun Sugar better.
I'm adding super snow white to my grow list..
@Wildcat82 thanks for the suggestion! I will read about those:)

You're right Tormato, I have tried in all color stages.. It was good!.. Just not "OMG best tomato ever, I will be growing this EVERY YEAR" good.. I realize I'm a minority haha..Tormato wrote: ↑Thu Jun 29, 2023 8:45 pmI'm under the assumption that you've tried SunGold in all of its color stages. I'm interested in Pink Princess, anyone grown it before, or let us know how it is later in the season.

Re: Favorite Cherry Tomato 2023
MaxJohnson, I thought Pink Princess tasted amazing last year. I couldn't stop eating them! The downside for me was that they split very easily, but I'm still growing it again this year
.
Josetom, I'm not a huge lover of Sungold because I find that the taste goes funky in late summer?!?!? I really LOVED the taste when it was allowed to ripen completely on the vine. Sadly I won't be growing it ever again because I lost my Sungold-loving dawg, and it would be too sad to not be able to share them with her

Re: Favorite Cherry Tomato 2023
I've only trialed it twice. But, both times the flavor tasted better as the season progressed, which is the opposite trend of most varieties in my garden.maxjohnson wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 12:25 am I'm interested in Pink Princess, anyone grown it before, or let us know how it is later in the season.
Very late in the season, almost all varieties start going downhill, with the exception of SunGold.

I've grew Pink Princess last year and was so satisfied with it that it will be one on my 'grow every year-list'.I liked the very sweet taste and that it also didn't grow to a huge tomato, only cherry-size.I really recommend it.And of course I grow it this year.maxjohnson wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 12:25 am I'm interested in Pink Princess, anyone grown it before, or let us know how it is later in the season.

Re: Favorite Cherry Tomato 2023
Pink Princess is a wonderful cherry tomato and so was Not Pink Princess.I know it was good when the rodents were taking them before I could. I made a few changes and finally enjoyed some fruit. Very sweet with a nice texture. The Not Pink Princess is variable. I have had both pink and yellow and white fruit from them. All were delicious, sweet and enjoyable.Lotte wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 12:26 pmI've grew Pink Princess last year and was so satisfied with it that it will be one on my 'grow every year-list'.I liked the very sweet taste and that it also didn't grow to a huge tomato, only cherry-size.I really recommend it.And of course I grow it this year.maxjohnson wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 12:25 am I'm interested in Pink Princess, anyone grown it before, or let us know how it is later in the season.

Re: Favorite Cherry Tomato 2023
I actually just had a conversation about Pink Princess at our community garden a couple of days ago. I was walking by a plot and saw a very happy looking plant with the most ridiculously enormous trusses and had to ask - it turned out to be Pink Princess. The plant did have a bit more fungal issues than some of the others in the same plot, but that might be a fluke. The gardener said it was her first year growing this variety, I’m excited to hear that folks on here like it!

Re: Favorite Cherry Tomato 2023
For fans of Sungold, try growing Sun Orange, same developer (Tokita) but DOES NOT SPLIT. Seeds are significantly more expensive, but worth it.
Another favorite is Sun Citron - super prolific.
Actually, I like all the tomatoes from Tokita with Sun Orange, Sun Citron, Sun Chocola, and Sun Garnet being my favorites. All are very robust plants with a lot of disease resistance. All have thin skin and splitting is very limited on all of these.
I also like the Torches, Red, Bronze and Sunset (Yellow). Red was my favorite.

Re: Favorite Cherry Tomato 2023
Made a trellis for the old man so he can grow more cherry tomatoes. First time trying out these tomato roller hooks.
Gonna grow these F1 side by side for a fun comparison, won't be spending this much money on hybrid seeds again though.
Esterina F1
Nectar F1
Rapunzel F1
Sakura F1
Sungold F1
Super Sweet 100 F1
Ambrosia Orange UBX
Also turned my gazebo into a trellis for the same purpose.

Most cherries do lousy in my garden.
They are usually very sweet with little flavor (Esterina F1), or they are flavorful with little sweetness.
That's why I stick with SunGold, which has loads of both.
