Re: Cat stare-down
Here, canned pink salmon (free to me) is #1 and roasted turkey #2 for the cats gobbling it up off of their plate. It's likely because it is an infrequent surprise to them. Mixing it up seems to be the key for them not turning their nose at food.rxkeith wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2024 9:58 pm if any of your cats will eat turkey, i get turkey necks, and giblets from a local restaurant for free.
they throw them out otherwise. necks, gizzards, and hearts get cooked in the pressure cooker at
two rings for 23 to 25 minutes, not sure what that translates to lbs/pressure. our cooker has two red lines
on the valve that pops up. livers get cooked in a separate pot. they don't take long to cook. our dog slorps
it all up mixed with kibble. make soup with the stock or cook rice in it. comes out good. use neck meat, and
giblets in soup if you like. only cost is the gas to get it and the cost of cooking it. now, will a cat eat turkey?
turkeys are birds, big birds. cats like birds. should work right?

I used to roast a turkey once a month, except in summer, for a very elderly woman down the street. When I'd walk in the door, her 16 year old cat would go bonkers, as soon as it smelled the still warm turkey. The woman's age and weight were in the high 90's, but she would get a 25 pound turkey every month. My guess is that her cat, and the strays at her door, were all well fed.

Re: Cat stare-down
My cat Cruiser tried to run off with the whole raw thanksgiving turkey.
Flew through the air and tried to snatch it as he went by.
Teeth hung up and left him dangling from the turkey and he wouldn't let go.
When we brought in a new sack of cat food he would attack it and rip it open with his teeth.
I miss that cat.
He would go to the vet with me not in a cat carrier.
He would hang next to me like a dog
Not one dog in the waiting room messed with him.
Leaving the vet he would run to the vehicle and wait to be let in.
I brought that cat up from a kitten going to work with me landscaping.
He was never far from me and slept with me at night.
Sadly he had a growth next to his heart and we had to have him put down.
I stayed toasted for 3 days after that and even took off work.
At parties he would just hang out with everyone.
Not scared of anything and struck fear in the hearts of all dogs.
He chased them instead of them chasing him.
Only if they got stupid.
He had plenty of dog friends too.

Re: Cat stare-down
Some older ladies gave me a female Siamese cat.
She was so jealous of me that if I went somewhere and got cat scent on me she would growl hiss and run behind the couch.
She would stay mad for a few hours.
Sukie was a lilac point.
Our other Siamese cat was a seal point and her name was Mary Lee.
I also ended up later with a big Siamese cat named Boomer.
I raised him from a kitten.
Our cats would follow us everywhere on the place and into the national forest.
Sometimes they would get tired and we had to carry them on our shoulders.

Re: Cat stare-down
Wild turkeys have slowly been expanding their range north in our state, but had not been seen in our woods until yesterday. We saw a small group of 4 or 5 bachelor toms out at the edge of the swamp and old horse pasture. They went off into the woods when they saw us. A couple of hours later, as I was working at my computer, I kept hearing unfamiliar popping, clucking sounds so went to investigate. Our silly black tuxedo cat Luke was out in the middle of the pasture, he was herding the wild turkeys which were strung out in a single line, slowly ambling back into the woods. It was comical to see him acting like a little border collie. Other than grumbling their disapproval, the turkeys were not very excited. I'm sure they saw him as a nuisance and could have attacked him if they chose to, but may have been as curious about him as he was about them. He's probably lucky they were not a family group of hens with chicks or he might have gotten a beating. I went out to retrieve him because I was afraid he would follow them too far in his fascination and get lost on the neighboring gated property. About an hour later, my husband forgot and let him out of the house again. The wild turkeys had come back and were now grazing on our septic field behind the house. Luke zipped over to join them, they didn't even bother clucking this time and all slowly waddled back into the woods with Luke bringing up the rear. He came back in about 20 minutes, so perhaps has gotten his fill of turkey time. Our other cat stayed well away from the turkeys, she has more sense and a suspicious nature. I wish I had had my long zoom Nikon handy for a movie clip.
