Nice redear. When will that fish spawn out in your water. Looks about 3-4 weeks out. Going to be a plump one.

I’m not sure when they spawn. This fish was pretty plump. When do redear tend to spawn in relation to Largemouth Bass? The LMB tend to spawn here sometime in March, maybe early-mid March.

Haven’t hooked any firearms yet. Have caught a few rods and reels. I knew a guy or two that would metal detect in places where the water was real low due to either drought or extra low tides. One was up north in New England along the Charles River and he found a whole solid sterling silver flatware service, minus 3 spoons. Another guy here locally has, allegedly, found a 19th century shipwreck, with gold and silver coins, but is only accessible at extreme low water. The silver set I did see, but the shipwreck was more heard it through the grapevine.

I’m afraid magnet fishing in some spots I know would be like okay now I have pulled up all this junk, what do I do with it? Am I now responsible for its proper disposal? I clean up enough of other people’s trash in my regular job, trust me, dirty diapers, beer cans, tobacco spit cans, piles of food, vomit, other filth, the works, my community has a lot, far too many, of filthy people that treat common area commercial parking lots as personal waste bins, this is unfortunately a rock hard truth. Some say it is a cultural thing, I just say some people are just trashy. So with that in mind, magnet fishing loses a lot of its appeal.

It is cultural, but not on a whole. Some people come from countries that have no trash cans. I once saw someone (with the way they talked and dressed,
I was about 99.9% sure they were not born here) leaning against a trash can. When they were done with their half-finished food, they just dropped it on the ground next to the can.

When I worked at west campus I would leave a half bottle of soda and food i didn't eat on the bench.
Not 15 minutes later a homless person would come by and eat it.
Better than tossing it in the trash for them to dig out.

This was much different. Think of an upside down taco landing on a greasy, bubblegum laden, sand after sidewalk snow cleaning, sidewalk. If it was put in the trash can, someone likely would have taken it later.

Spawn in the midwest mid May into early June, similar to bluegill. Guessing just after bigmouths in your water. We don't fish for them but pick up a few every now and then. Bottom feeders, unlike many others in the panfish family. This fatty was caught last May. Quick picture before releasing her. My wife always gets the bigger redear.

Went out to the local saltwater yesterday. The fish beat me up pretty badly, with a lot of refusals and missed connections, but I managed one 22” slot red on the Gartside soft hackle. Notice the Texas shaped spot mid way down the side.

Maybe it wasn’t the fish I was after, but a “state” of mind.

While the Brisket was cooking, I thought I’d take advantage of a calm morning to hit the surf for some speckled trout action. The wind might have been next to zero, but the surf was rocking from TS Alex I suppose. I took a beating and got knocked down off my feet several times, lost my hat. I hurt the fish a little, too.

Tied up a few Borski Bonefish Sliders this afternoon. Noticed my inventory is a little low. I really only tie enough so I can continue to fish with flies. Tying itself is only marginally enjoyable. There’s certainly Borski sliders available from various vendors, but then I generally find something I don’t like about the commercial ties. They often seem to be tied on hooks I don’t like or are over-dressed or there’s something else that I don’t agree on such as the price. A Single Saltwater fly purchased from a vendor with the taxes and shipping could very likely cost more than than 10 soft plastic lures or several identical sliders tied at home. Tying these myself at home really lowers the expenditure, except maybe the time involved. Perhaps there’s 75 cents of materials in each one of these, but I haven’t shopped hooks or the rest of it in a while.

I've been catfishing on the Ohio river a few times lately. Get out early trying to beat the heat drifting cut skipjack in deeper sections.

@wildcat62 what kind of depth are you talking about in the Ohio River? I know that river drains a lot of territory, I’m just curious how deep things can get.

Nice catfish, looks like a yellow, flathead, catfish in the second photo. I guess the others are blue catfish? Very pale looking blue catfish, but don’t see any little spots like a channel catfish should have.

Since Kentucky shares a border on the Ohio River with other states, how are fishing licenses handled on the river? Does one state’s license cover the entire river or is there a need for an additional license or endorsement?

Caught those in 40-50 ft.

Flathead in the middle pic & the other 2 are Blues. Surprising but I didn't catch any channels in 3 trips last week.

Either license is good for the river. Just can't fish past the mouth of any creek. I've bought an Ohio out of state license for years & spend way more time in those waters than here in my own state.

I had the the two cats pegged as blue cats due to the flat anal fin.
Here there are strict rules as to how many and how long of what kind.
You don't know what you have the game warden doesn't see it as an excuse.

I've noticed that the fishing equipment is starting to show back up on line.
There is a new ugly stik catfish rod.
But prices are up all over.

I’ve got enough rods for three or four lifetimes. Just have to get a little terminal tackle, soft plastic paddle tails and lead jig heads, now and then and that’s only for the low profile baitcasting rig for chunking lures. The brand I like on the jig heads is never in stock, though. These anodized Al Fly reels never seem to go bad in the saltwater, but I can’t say the same for the baitcasting reels. Fly reels are infinitely less complicated internally than a typical baitcasting reel. My baitcasting reels eventually all bite the dust if they get enough time in the saltwater or they get less than perfect, rough casting or something like that. Saltwater always finds a way in and corrupts close tolerance gears, bearings and the like. Enough salt is in the air down at the beach to be trouble.

Heard some fly tying materials are also hard to find these days. I might be getting low on some deer body and belly hair colors. Worst case, I obtain my own deer hair and dye my own. Really, natural color deer hair is the best anyway. It’s always nice to whip up your own lures instead of having to buy them. Not up to making my own hooks or nylon, though.

Well they have started making a particular rod they didn't really make.
And I looked long and hard and the only way I could get it was to build one.
What they have done is make an affordable long rod made for catfish.
Something that could cast way out there.
What they have done is answer the call of many of us.
A ten foot rod with the right weight and action.
That seems to be the catfish special.

Or maybe I just want another rod.
I was raised poor and the only rod I had was a true temper that broke at the hand grip.
I had to repair it with epoxy glue and a piece of rebar.
The reel was a Zebco 33.

Pulled the trigger on the 10 foot rod.
Now I have to figure out what reel I have to put on it.
Sure as heck not buying another reel.
