A clothespin! Why didn't I think of that.GoDawgs wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 5:07 pmOK, I had to get up and go look at the boxes of GV saltines we just got. They're still the one pound box of the same square ones we've always had for ages. They must be messin' with y'all up there! And yes, the price has gone up. We started buying them when they were .76 a box. Then they went to .78 in Oct '21 until they took a big jump to $1.12 last June. All of a sudden. Wham! Fortunately they're still $1.12 here.Tormato wrote: ↑Mon Feb 20, 2023 3:30 pm The local WalMart hadn't stocked any 1 lb boxes of GV saltines for many, many months, just the high end brands costing 3X - 4X the GV price. Then they started stocking some GV in 10+ ounce celo packs at $1.78 each. Finally a small supply of the 1 lb boxes at $1.29, are coming in. It doesn't sound like much, but I go through a lot of tea and saltines in the winter. Not much in the summer, as an opened pack loses its crispiness in about a day.
Pickles twists the top of the wax paper tube(gently! don't want any busted crackers!) and clips it with a clothespin. They seem to stay fresh that way.
I just watched perhaps the most boring youtube video ever. For some reason, youtube started sending me videos on people building shelters/cabins out in the wild, and spending snowy freezing (outdoor) nights inside with a small wood stove and a sleeping bag. A lot of time is shown splitting fire wood, which is boring enough.
But, this one video, it was of a man taking about 20 minutes to carve one clothespin out of a small block of wood. At least it felt like 20 minutes.

Not to ask the obvious question, but what does a Grizzly Adams type need with a clothespin?

Re: Disguising Price Increases
It's a not so obvious question. One, to hang his washed clothes, it's a clothespin. Two, If he hasn't bathed or washed his clothes in months, then it doubles as a nosepin.
The thing is, the guy was the least looking Grizzly Adams of all of the videos that I've seen. Most build log cabins, gaps between logs filled with moss or other material. He basically built a tar paper shack of thin boards, without the tar paper. Sunlight was streaming through the walls everywhere. Cold air in winter, biting insects in summer, is what he will get.
I guess it's a youtube fad, where people are trying to make money with subscribers and viewership numbers. I don't think carving a clothespin is going to draw them in.

We rented a cabin on a ranch in Junction Texas on the Llano River.
If it wasn't for me running a trot line 24 hours a day we wouldn't have had catfish to fry.

Now it's the GV Buttery Rounds (Ritz type crackers). If you've ever made round waffles with not enough batter in the mold, that's what they look like. Just like the rectangular saltines, I've never seen it before. This time it was an entire sleeve of crackers. I must be jinxed.

WalMart eggs have dropped in price about $1 a week for the past two weeks, now at $3.26 a dozen. And they are X-large, not the previous large only, which is all they've had for several months. At the new price, they will not last the day before running out. My guess is that almost all customers will be buying multiple dozens. We have some 1st class panic hoarders, here.

I noticed butter was down a dollar.
I get the cheapest brand they have and I can't tell the difference from one to the other.

It would be interesting to call Corporate and let them know about it. You just might get a coupon for a free box. And while you're at it, ask them about the thing with the rectangular saltines too, if it's a permanent change or something they're playing with. Let them know you're not happy about it!Tormato wrote: ↑Wed Feb 22, 2023 5:37 pm Now it's the GV Buttery Rounds (Ritz type crackers). I got some eggs at Aldi this morning for just $2.70/doz. Cheapest I've seen in a long time! Butter still $3.99, and not much else has gone down.

The rounds and the rectangles are just signs of quality control going down hill. I believe we are going to find a lot more of it, because culling defective product causes companies loss of profits. I mentioned it awhile ago, with potatoes, carrots, onions, and now it's 5 lb bags of apples.GoDawgs wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 8:31 amIt would be interesting to call Corporate and let them know about it. And speaking of onions, can you send your State Police up this way? One local store is selling onions with a Vidalia sign next to them. Reading the little sticker on the onions, it says Sweet Onion, and from Peru.

Poachers! Peru? Harumph! Maybe you can copy the following blurb about the federal law and give a copy to the store manager. It might be fun to see their reaction. I'm also giving you the contact information for the Vidalia Onion Council. Maybe let the manager know that if you see the sign remain in place, you'll call the council. The sign isn't only trademark violation but also fraud, IMHO. It's probably the work of the produce person and the manager doesn't realize what's going on.

"Because Vidalia® onions are sweetly unique, farmers united to seek legal protection for their crop and its name. Federal Marketing Order No. 955 was established in 1989, to stipulate where the crop can be grown and help with research and promotion of Vidalia onions. The Vidalia Onion Committee administers FMO No. 955 and authorizes production research, marketing research and development and marketing promotion programs. This federal program along with Georgia state laws that protect the Vidalia trademark have provided a legal framework for the industry. So, you can try to grow a sweet onion elsewhere, but you cannot call it a “Vidalia,” unless it is from Georgia!"

Re: Disguising Price Increases
I will talk to the manager, or the assistant manager who runs that area of the store, and hand them a note about FMO No. 955. They are clever in that the Vidalia sign is a few inches to the side of the sweet onion bin, not in front of it. And, they have correct labeling stickers, Peruvian, on each onion. I'll mention that if I see it again, I will "likely" be contacting Georgia authorities,GoDawgs wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 5:56 amPoachers! Peru? Harumph! And, your posting this year's harvesting date would be greatly appreciated. I then start looking in the stores for Vidalia onions about a week later.

I found how to be notified when this year's onions are ready to ship. It didn't say it was for merchandisers or wholesalers so I put in my e-mail addy. We'll see.Tormato wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 7:56 amI will talk to the manager, or the assistant manager who runs that area of the store, and hand them a note about FMO No. 955. Re: Disguising Price Increases
What about no price at all.
Seems like all the convenience stores around here don't have any pricing on anything.
Some time ago I saw a guy ask the clerk what a bag of Fritos cost.
Normally it would be around 2 dollars.
The clerk said 5 dollars and some change.
How do you know you're not being ripped off by the clerk?
The other day I had one charge me for a bottle of water I didn't have.
I called him out on it.
He said he didn't know how to take it off my card.
I said well I'll just go get the water if I bought it.
And I did.
I'm curious as to how a bottle of water ended up on my card in the first place.
He didn't scan a bottle of water.
One idiot complained about how much lunch cost.
It was over 30 dollars and it was all sugary trash he bought at the convenience store.
He does this every day and he lives at home with his mom at 24 years old.
No girl friend.

Re: Disguising Price Increases
I've been using the self checkout since the pandemic started. For one thing, I always have two sets of groceries to check out - my own and my Mom's. It's easier for me to optimize how it all gets bagged up, paid separately, and loaded in the car for delivery.
Anyway about a month ago this twitchy little store manager came and stood over me while I was checking out. He asked questions, I explained I was checking for two, he offered 'help' which I declined. And then, when I had finished Mom's and was into my own, he rushed over again saying 'Let me help' and he grabbed a case of tissues from the bottom of the cart and rang it in before I could stop him.
I told him in no uncertain terms, I have already paid for that and you will have to take it off the bill. I have the receipt for it, I said, if you want to see it. I was not happy. So he fussed around and eventually managed to fix it. "Oh no problem I'll just take that off then." He did not even apologize properly for messing with my bill. Extremely annoying.

Its a good thing he didn't do that to my high strung mom.
She would have slapped him across the store.
