They say it might turn into a hurricane.
Seems like we are getting one weekly.

It's sunny today with a cool and stiff northerly breeze. I told Pickles that all the rain would bring out the fire ants and sure enough. Hills are popping up everywhere, including in some of the raised beds. The damp soil is easy for mound building and they;'re having a ball. I've been busy pouring a gallon of soap mix on each mound. "Death From Above."

[mention]worth1[/mention] rather gentle English style rain today and too cool at 70 degrees for normal tropical weather. About 2 or 3 tenths an inch and it’s been dripping since before noon. Definitely not your standard tropical downpour or pre storm feel.

We got the cool air behind Sally too, I think the high today was only around 10 C/50 F but a mix of sun and cloud and not too windy. Sally made the mushrooms bump! Frost warning tonight, but if we don't get it, we may go again tomorrow for bounty. Will get some rain from Teddy on Wednesday but the main storm track is well to the west of us.
Good luck with Beta! I wonder how far we'll get through the greek alphabet this year.

[mention]Bower[/mention] good to hear Hurricane Teddy isn’t expected to cause much problems up in Newfoundland, or at least your part of it. Water under 80 degrees, what is that 27 C, generally is the death of a tropical storm.


Beta is looking pretty benign so far, some needed moisture without any damaging winds. Hope it stays true to form.

So far, Lots of weird little inconsequential storms this year, with a couple of exceptions.

[mention]karstopography[/mention] indeed, there are some benefits to being surrounded by cold water. We've seen some Cat 1 landfalls and that is about the worst hurricane we can get, as long as the ocean is cold. Igor, ten years ago today, had maximum sustained winds of 140 kph and gusts to 170, and caused a lot of damage.
We do get some winter storms with about the same ferocity, although it depends on what measure is used. One meteorologist compared the snowmageddon storm to a Cat 3 on the basis of pressure differences iirc, but afaik the sustained wind speeds were only comparable to a Cat 1. The highest gust recorded was 171 so definitely on par with Igor.

Honestly Cat 1 is plenty bad enough. My mind just boggles when I see the intensity of hurricanes going to cat 3,4,5. The cat 5's are monstrosities!

All our bad storms are 'hunker down and wait it out' storms. We don't get 'flee for your life' storms. Which is good, because it just wouldn't be feasible to evacuate.

Beta is not scheduled to make landfall until tonight or early tomorrow morning, but the storm is already pushing water inland. This photo is of Kemah, Texas, where my husband and I often go to eat lunch. It is a few miles from the house. This is how the back of the restaurant looked at noon today. Needless to say we turned around and went back home.

Only an uninformed person would say it's only a tropical storm.
They can be devastating.

We’ve been stuck under a feeder band all morning so one hard downpour follows another. Probably up over 2 inches since 8 am, ~5cm for you metric types, out in the rain gauge. A Few old rotten limbs and clumps of spanish moss have blown down. Okra looks like it’s been blown over. Bamboo trellises covered in gourds and squash seem to be weathering the conditions without issue.

The wind phase has likely peaked here based on the position of Beta and now we shall see about the rain accumulation. From the radar returns, Brazoria county where I am is the rainfall champion so far. The storm is well spread out and many areas look like they are barely getting any rain.

The weather has definitely taken a turn here in the Washington DC region. All last week we had hazy skies, which were eerie and strange ... owing to a jetstream pulling smoke from the Western wildfires over us. But even before that, the weather had started to turn, with cooler days and nights. The smoke seems to have cleared out over the weekend and it was absolutely gorgeous. 73, sunny, breezy, those days when you're happy to be alive.

I don't know if I want to jinx it but we seem to be getting fall weather super early this year - low in the 60s and high in the mid 70s for this whole week. I started my fall seeds (broccoli, mustards, collards, kales, kohralbi) last week and going to finish cleaning up the summer stuff in the garden this weekend! Last weekend I was so determined but then it decided to rain for the hour that I was outside...

Pretty perfect here. High around 80 or 82, cool nights in the 50s. No humidity, looks like a week of more of the same. Happy mix of hot, warm and cool weather crops all in the garden at once. Won’t stay that way for long.

We are having a little heat wave here this week. High today 23 C and the humidex 28 C. In Fahrenheit that is low 70's/humidex low 80's. In other words, HOT HOT SUMMER WEATHER. It's all relative eh.
Our normals for the period are high 57 F, low 43 F. And this is going on for day after day....
The humidity is crazy though, 85% in the best part of the day, I had a shirt on the line that slipped and bunched together in the wind, and half of it is still wet. In the greenhouse, well the remaining tomatoes are loving the heat. Those late fruit are ripening, as I'm happy to see. I have already cut down a lot of plant material that was blighted, so it's good to see those stragglers happy.
Dug some potatoes and pulled some carrots today. They were ready to go.
It's nearly time to plant garlic but doesn't feel like it, at all.

49 degrees F at 0600, that’s 9 degrees C for you metric types here at 21 feet asl and 29 degrees north latitude 95 west longitude and still September. Crazy, crazy good! Dew point 48 so 49 is about as low as it can go, especially with dawn minutes away.

Of course, in town it’s much, much warmer. Add a few degrees for medium towns. Center of Houston at the same time 55 miles to the north is 10-12 degrees warmer. Trees and grass evidently don’t retain heat like masonary and asphalt.

No wonder growing tomatoes outdoors in fall and winter in the center of the city was easier than it is here out in the semi-country.

Oh wow... the humidex today is up to 90 F, that is at close to 3 in the afternoon which is usually our peak temperature time. Temperature is 77 F or 25C. It doesn't get much hotter than this here ever, so it sure is different for the time of year.
