Well, just to make sure I rechecked the boxes of seed in the freezer and glad I did. I probably wasn't as thorough as I should have been when I first checked envelopes for Blauer Speck and there IS enough there! So thank you a bunch for the heads up but I won't need any this time. Hopefully I'll add to my own stock when this fall's go to seed this spring, enough to send you some next MMMM.

@pepperhead212 , this is a good opportunity for you to try some! It's really pretty and holds for a while without getting woody. And it's OP for seed saving. I do mine from transplants and the first pick from this past spring was 50 days from transplant. Transplants were set out 3-4 weeks from seeding. I did some Kolibri two springs ago and yeah, they are fast!. But the two planted together would give a natural stagger of harvest. I'm totally out of that one.

Still waiting for Southern Exposure to come. Their website is still the 2022 version and they said they are revamping their whole website so I guess I have to wait. I like to have all my seed ordered by New Year's Eve.
….
I asked SESE a few weeks ago when the new catalog would be out, and they said January. I’ve been ordering seeds for a local tomato sale and was hoping to see their new varieties, but January will be too late for this project (unless they list something really enticing, or unless Renaissance doesn’t come through!).

Is it true that Blauer Speck has fewer leaves than other kohlrabi, and can be planted closer together?

It always surprised me that Kolibri F1 had such few leaves, compared to other kohlrabi varieties I've grown, yet they were the fastest, and some of the larger ones (though not the giants). Azure Star - another purple, that might be similar to Blauer Speck - was almost as fast, and got almost as large, and also had smaller leaves, like Kolibri. Only grew Early Purple once - wasn't as early as others, nor as large. Grand Rapids is my favorite green variety - fairly large, and not woody - but it is probably the largest, and widest spread leaves of all of them.

Well, fiddle sticks. They might miss the boat with me too. No telling when in January and I have stuff to start about mid month. Oh well, I don't need much this year so what I do need I can get somewhere else. Thanks for the heads up!

I plant them 8" apart and they do fine.

Pulled the first one this afternoon. I pulled the bottom two leaves off because they were starting to yellow a bit and we can't have that in a photo, now can we? LOL!

Stitchingmom wrote: Sat Dec 10, 2022 4:11 pm I got my Baker Creek catalog. I'm not looking...... for now. I went absolutely nuts buying seeds this year, anticipating huge increases. I am waiting for a giant order from Nikitovka and I am eyeing a TON of micro-dwarfs from HRSeeds. Somebody help me!

Actually, I should be good for years, and I can fill in any "holes" by trading. My husband thinks I am absolutely nuts.
If he thinks you're nuts now, wait until you get your MMMM package.

I do need a bit more help, though. A wish list of just tomatoes and cucumbers ain't gonna cut it. What else, in veggie/fruit/flower seed?
I'll do my best to be more greedy. *evil grin*

Here you go:

Lemon Basil
Everleaf Emerald Towers Basil
Babette Carrots
Coral Carrots
Naval Carrots
Manoa Sugar Peas
Patio Pride Peas
Bolognese Zucchini
Dark Star Zucchini
Emerald Delight Zucchini
Table Dainty Squash
Spineless Beauty Squash

As for flowers, I avoid yellow, orange, and red. I love cottage garden-type flowers. I finally live in a place I can grow flowers that like cooler weather!
SO GLAD to be back! I was locked out for about three months, for some strange reason.

Missed you all terribly!

I got my Seeds 'N Such yesterday. Sort of low this season, probably because I didn't order many the last two seasons from the usual places. Still got one from Johnny's, even though I stopped buying from them years ago, when the shipping prices, with them and some others, got way too high.

I got Territorial today as well as Selected Seeds —- I don’t know why I’m on that list!

I looked online at the Southern Exposure catalog and already made a list! But other than the link for the new catalog, the website still looks the same. A couple of varieties on my list are either already out or not yet updated.
