Help me find my new favorite!
I am trying to find a tomato that fits my expectations if there is one! I am looking for something the size and texture of an oxheart, with an intense tomato flavor. I found Black Krim, Paul Robeson, and Carbon to be very blah. I like the tomato taste of Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes and also Sunsugar. I love the size and shape of Upstate. Not something that is soft and mushy. Any help on a variety?

It sounds like you would enjoy a sweeter black, like Indian Stripe or Cherokee Purple. IS is the better (more reliable) producer of the two I believe.
OTOH for the texture of a oxheart, you want an oxheart.... there are lots of good ones and I bet MissS can tell you what works in your growing zone.

You don't live so very far from me. I'm in Pewaukee. Some tomatoes that do very well for me here are Stump of the World, Winsall, Barlow Jap, Wes, Mayo's Delight, and McKinley. Be sure not to water your tomatoes for a few days before you harvest them or they all will be bland. Of course your taste buds may be very different then mine and your soil would not be the same at all so I don't know if you will enjoy these the same that I do. Hope that the list helps.

Dester might be worth a look.

Re: Help me find my new favorite!
Sadly no one informed Hurricane Henri to wait until the tomatoes were ripe and picked before dumping all this water on us! Half my tomatoes are new this year but many are bland from too much rain in the last 10 days while ripening. Now this added rain may really do them in. Most are grown in straw bales which are saturated. Before the recent rains they were drying out! Hard to win! Best tasting tomatoes so far have been African Queen, True Colors. Green Gables, KBX, Dagma’s Perfection and RGN 14.

You describe many of the hybrids that exist now. Have you tried varieties like Big Beef or Champion? They hold up well, are great producers, aren't soft so they can survive transportation and have a strong tomato taste.

If you want sweet tomatoes, try warming up your soil. That should take care of mushiness/mealiness, too, but not the softness (they'll probably be juicer, actually). Refrigerating them can help them to be firmer, though, but that does, of course, change the taste.

Shule I don't think it's sweetness I want. Not even sure how to describe it. More like tangy? Not overly sweet, but with some acidic flavor maybe?

If you like Stump of the World then you may also like Winsall, Rebel Yell, Marianna's Peace, Dester, Rose, Brandywine from Croatia and Barlow Jap. These all have a similar taste profile. Of course there are plenty more on my list...

It's the Mostly Mystery Mater Mailing so it's supposed to remain a secret as to what I am sending in. The only varieties that I disclose are hybrid tomatoes and flowers and such.

Try out Aunt Ginny's Purple (PL, pink, beefsteak). For my garden here in very hot and humid Tulsa, most are very sweet and very tangy.

Re: Help me find my new favorite!
Yes that's the MMMM. You post your most wanted so that everyone knows what you want and if they have it they will send it in. Then there are the seeds that you send in for categories and such. Those I keep a secret. Of course there is the spoiler alert thread where some people will post what they are sending in so that others can make their wish list easier. I am a bit more old school with the swap and keep my entries a secret unless they are hybrids. Up until last year I kept traditional that I would not even contemplate opening the spoiler thread. I just really, really enjoy being surprised and the mystery of it all.

Re: Help me find my new favorite!
I just tried Stump of the World yesterday and I would say that it was delicious! I think I liked Dester a bit better though. Another one that I found to be tangy was Yoder's German Pink, which is a pink oxheart.
Not to derail the thread, but for the MMMM what information do people typically include on the seed packet? So far, I have only put the name, fruit color, fruit type, leaf type and growth type (determinate etc). I am also including when I harvested the seeds and where I purchased the original seeds from. Anything else that I should include?
