@GoDawgs; you did see the part about them having found a 1200 year old canoe a while back? They expect to turn up other such things.

"Likely used for fishing, the canoe ultimately was abandoned on what might have been the shoreline but was eventually buried in sediment on what is now a sloping drop-off as LAKE LEVELS ROSE BY AS MUCH AS 16 FEET." (bolds/caps/italics added)

Climate change....?

Climate change, surely some in 3000 years, but the much bigger phenomena is that rivers move...or at least they did until modern times. We have reinforced the banks with concrete and use reservoirs to control the flows.

Worth I don't think we can get a hold of any virgin stands of white oak nowadays, certainly not down at the home depot.

Cool find. The oldest dugout canoe found so far in North America was found in Florida and was 7,000 years old. The world’s oldest was found in the Netherlands and was around 10,000 years old. I wonder how long mankind has been making boats from logs?

For about as long as their wives have been sending them to the local Lake and River Mart to pick up a few things.

Jean Auel has us trading up and down the danube 40,000 years ago in dugout keels with built up sides. There is a lot of looney stuff in there too, especially the last few books of the saga as they trend to modern PC garbage (not to mention smut overdose  ), but the first books were pretty good and somewhat believable. The problem is every tribal language had stranger and enemy meaning the same thing. That was totally natural when you consider every new tribe you met brought you new diseases and stole off with your young females. Childbirth had a terrible attrition on women and it was part of your tribe's survival. But it did not lend itself to friendly chats with open arms.

I think there were many original discoveries that were lost due to famine and disease and independently re-discovered by another tribe before trade developed and allowed knowledge to be spread. I have to think it is far longer than 10,000 years back that man first floated on water and was spearing those great big river fish that had no claws to maim the hunters.

They make some crazy finds underwater. I was reading about hunting fences they found in Lake Huron.

There was one in Europe too, completely under water.
That is because water levels were so much lower when the glaciers were first melting at the end of the last ice age. Lake levels and sea level rose and covered up the old hunting grounds.

As a college student from Iowa, a friend and I visited Madison every once in a while. When the hippies weren’t blowing up buildings, they were out on the lake floating on logs or cardboard boats after smoking the funny stuff. Maybe those are some the old logs coming back to the surface.

That is my old canoe. I got drunk the last time I was up in Minnesota fishing and couldn't remember where I put it so I just left without it.
