Ken4230 from Western Ky
Long time gardener, 70+ years. I can remember hoeing weeds in my grandparents truck patch before I was old enough to go to school. Sure am glad I found this place, started out at Gardenweb, migrated to Tomatoville when Gardenweb closed and then got locked out of Tomatoville for several years.
I am transitioning to Dwarfs next year, if I am still alive and kicking. I will still grow several of the most productive heirlooms. I grow mostly tomatoes and peppers.

I'm so happy that you found us here. It sounds as if you have a wealth of growing experience to share. It's a funny thing, but with gardening, there is always more to learn. No two seasons are ever alike.

@Ken4230 Welcome. I also started out at Garden Web followed by TV as many others here did. I still get an occasional email from an old active thread at Garden Web now Houzz.

Re: Ken4230 from Western Ky
Welcome @Ken4230! While I've been in central Texas for 50+ years, I was born in KY. Still have bunches of relatives in that area. My grandparents had a huge veggie garden every year up into their 80s.
This is my second year of container gardening. Am planning my first open-pollinated and heirloom tomatoes from seed next year. Most will be from the Dwarf Tomato Project. Have been researching varieties, purchasing seed, practicing fermentation, creating Excel and Word docs to track stuff, and other obsessive activities. Gonna be real hard to wait until January!
Tell us which heirlooms you like to grow.

Re: Ken4230 from Western Ky
I have in-laws in Lubbock and Clarendon, great people. My oldest grandson was a news producer in Harlingen for a while. He loved it. I have about 24 that I grow every year. The potato leafed heirlooms seems to have less disease in our hot and humid climate. Rebel Yell, Limbaugh's Potato Top, Terhune, Prudens Purple, Stump of the World, Dester, Kentucky Cabin, Vincent Watts, Purple Dog Creek, and Big BeefF5. Plus a lot more.TX-TomatoBug wrote: ↑Sat Jul 06, 2024 8:31 pm Welcome @Ken4230! While I've been in central Texas for 50+ years, I was born in KY. Still have bunches of relatives in that area. I lived in Kentucky for about a year (Louisville, Brandenburg, Madisonville, and Corbin). It's a great place.

Oldest girl lives in Louisville and has for almost 30 years. Both are retired from the school system although Scott still teaches a lot of classes at the local colleges. Spent a lot of time in Madisonville, and loved it. Used to be an awesome "down home" type restaurant in Corbin. I like living in Kentucky, if I didn't I would probably be a little bit more South.

Re: Ken4230 from Western Ky
A maternal 7th Great Grandfather sat on a post-Revolutionary War jury (along with one Dan'l Boone) trying two (2) large (4000+ acres on the Ohio River) landholders who were accused of being British sympathizers.
After being found guilty, their seized land became what is now the city of Louisville.
My maternal Grandfather (1900-1962) had a very bad stutter; he left Bushtown (Mercer County-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushtown_(west),_Kentucky) at the age of 14 for Milwaukee, which advertised a school that guaranteed a cure. A few years later, he met my Iron Mountain, MI transplanted Grandmother...and the rest is history.
