In fact, the USPS states that potatoes can be mailed without a box. Simply write the recipient's address and your return address on the potato, weigh it for postage, and it can be shipped as-is.
To mail a potato:
Address it: Write the recipient's address on the potato.
Add return address: Write your return address on the potato.
Weight it: Get the potato weighed at a post office to determine the postage.
Mail it: Mail the potato as-is.
