Red Robin pot size?

Never grew tiny indoor tomatoes before but decided to try some Red Robin plants. They will need transplanted soon into their permanent pots. I realized this afternoon that I have no idea how big the pots will need to be. Anybody ever grown these that can tell me about what size to get?

1 gallon is enough, but I've always had more harvest with atleast 1.5 to 2gal. Personally I only use 1 gallon for trialling.

I'd love to grow indoor tomatoes during the Winter but tried it a few years ago. Had such a problem with aphids and fungas gnats that I'm hesitant to try again.

Don't even know where these critters came from. I've heard fungas gnat eggs lie dormant in potting mix, but don't know about aphids. I don't have any other plants in the house.

I hope your Red Robins are successful and you can keep the bugs in check.

Worse comes to worse I will spray them down with Dawn and hopefully keep the bugs down to a minimum. Thanks for the heads-up!

You don't want the grow medium surface to be wet all the time. Fungas Gnats love wet medium. Some people recommend using fine vermiculite to cover the surface, I don't know how effective that is.

Use ProMix or some sterile potting mix, make sure it is sold indoor or under a roof not exposed to rain. No holes damage in the bag when you buy it. I believe a lot of times those potting mix bags are out in the rain at Lowes and Home Depot have more fungus gnats.

There is a product called Mosquito Bits, it kill fungus gnats, but have a short action window. I mix it with my indoor potting mix, it does go moldy if it's on the surface though. The "Mosquito Dunks" lasts longer, you can add that to your watering can and then water the plants with it.

As for aphids, I use neem oil + organic peppermint soap. Where there are aphids, usually it's ants that are farming them. The ants are the root cause.

I usually grow Red Robins in an 8" pot/1.5 gallon pot. You could probably go down to a 7" pot, but you'd need to water even more frequently
