Cardoon can be very tasty and pretty neat as a plant in the landscape, ditto artichokes. Very architectural looking.

Ahh, potatoes, got some Irish cobblers, a few french fingerlings, some purple vikings and some Peter Wilcox for this years growing out. Looking forward to seeing how they produce here in Texas.

I’m going to grow more cardoon next fall and maybe some artichoke. I never wanted to dedicate space for them, but now I have freed up some additional space.

Dug up my Kennebec potatoes today. I hadn’t been robbing new potatoes from these like I did from the Red Pontiac. Anyway, they look good and there’s some nice sized ones for frying.

Nice harvest. Ours are a ways off yet til harvest, but sure am looking forward to having the varieties we picked out to grow.

Ate the last of our last Kennebec potatoes mashed last night. Only one in the box had gone semi-bad (might have been injured during harvest) and they were stored in a cardboard box at room temperature in a cabinet that gets seldom opened. Most of the potatoes were still hard and with no indication of sprouting or rot.

Tells me that I could grow a few more next year. They sure are great flavored potatoes even after two months of storage at room temperature or high room temperature since we’ve been keeping it at around 78°.

I’m ready to plant my Red LaSoda and Red Pontiac potatoes, but the soil is still too wet. The potatoes themselves have sprouted and might have an inch of growth. I have 10 Lasoda and 14 Pontiac golf ball sized potatoes each with two or three sprouts. Plan is to put them all in a 4’X8’ raised bed.

Reifel’s has yet to get in the Yukon Gold and Kennebec potatoes. Shipment was delayed for some reason. Maybe today they are due in.

I generally get my potatoes planted a couple of weeks later than I want due to some reason like wet soil or delayed availability of potatoes. Planting Calendar here has a January 15th to February 15th window.

Mine usually go in some time during the last two weeks of February depending on soil moisture. They're chitting now. I'm doing an 11' row each of red Pontiac and Yukon. I sure hope they did better than last year when they got that black on the inside. Gotta remember to keep them slightly on the dry side and for sure not overwater!

I picked out small potatoes at the feed and seed, 11 of each and it cost .95 for one kind and $1.25 for the other. A small price to pay for tasty goodies later!

I can’t find good seed potatoes anymore at the store use to get all kinds now it’s a big white bag of potatoes been like for last 2 years looks like I’ll be ordering seed potatoes this year.

I planted my 10 Red Lasoda and 14 Red Pontiac potatoes, but I must have miscounted because I had one row of four and the rest all 3, 8X3 +1=25. I decided the soil was dry enough after all. The 4’X 8’ bed has the fluffiest soil of all my beds, but not like sphagnum peat type of fluff.

I planted pretty deep probably minimum of 4” from top of potato to surface of soil, but some were quite a bit deeper than that. I didn’t have much freeboard in this raised bed and in fact had to move soil out of the bed to a neighboring bed just so I can mulch a little and add a bit of soil later.

I’m do the same, I pick out the small potatoes. Both these red potatoes types were $.95/#, I think the same as last year. Barely spent anything for them, was it even three dollars, I can’t remember. Potatoes are a good crop for not having to spend a lot to get something very good and a decent amount of it.

The red lasoda and red Pontiac potatoes planted February 1st. are all up and running. The look great. Might add a layer of dirt/mulch soon, there’s some room in there.

No sign of the Kennebec yet. They got planted February 15th.

I added a layer of soil to the 4’x8’ bed with the red potatoes. The plants probably averaged 8” tall and I added 3 or 4 inches of soil.

I dug down to see if the Kennebec potatoes are waking up. They are, should be any day now they break the surface.

All systems go.

I think I'll toss in a few store bought Yukon Gold potatoes that have sprouted in some containers.

I have a sprouted potato end on my kitchen windowsill, probably a Pontiac Red, which might get tucked into a pot if I have enough dirt. Happens every year... it's hard to throw out a healthy sprout!

Depending on time of year and temperature the darned things will either dry out or sprout within a week.
I usually just break the sprouts off and continue eating the potatoes.
