Thanks for the heads up. I need to search for an appropriate tomato for such an event. The grocer's heirloom's just don't cut it for me. Perhaps I will have to use a frozen speciman for this momentous day.

BTW not one Kroger store by me has any type of Neuske's to offer.

I buy bulk bacon(10 lbs. box awesome old fashioned taste ) I use the large hamburger buns with homemade mayo/horseradish dressing. Can't decide between a Kentucky Cabin (yellow) and Dwarf BrandyFred. Both will be ready and will fit the bun. Probably skip the lettuce unless I can find a good Romain at the store. 3/4 slice of tomato and several slices of bacon. I've sat here and talked myself into having both tomatoes.

Thanks for the heads up, it's now on my calendar. Was going to have one tomorrow but I might can wait. It will be a chore but maybe I can wait.
One thing I do is throw the slices in the freezer for about 10 min. Cold tomato on warm bacon is to die for.

I might go with a rock hard store bought tomato that is fried with panko bread crumbs.
Doesn't matter because the whole thing will taste like Duke's mayonnaise anyway.
I might mix in an egg yolk with the mayonnaise for extra creaminess.

July 22nd you say?

 I should have a ripe SunGold by then.

  I can slice that, put it between two saltines, add a leaf of purslane, 1/8 tsp of mayo, and a sprinkling of bacon bits.

I think you somehow got the date wrong. I always thought that it was today  Having a hard time not just declaring today as: Early BLT Day and having a couple with the not so special tomatoes. BrandyFred and Kentucky Cabin I have already pledged for your special day. Waiting for the 22nd with great anticipation, and when that great day arrives I will have one for breakfast and then one for lunch.

Some might not agree but I prefer my BLT bread lightly toasted.
Nothing crazy just enough to make the bread hold together and not get soggy.

I wait with great anticipation for that momentous day. Earlier made a grocery run, fresh large hamburger buns, a 4 pack of Romain, bacon is thawing out now, both tomatoes will be dead ripe and I keep at least a quart of the mayo/horseradish concoction in the fridge. This will be my first BLT of the year, normally I would have already had several, when the tomatoes are in, that's usually my lunch. The big ones came along at just the right time.

Well now, I have been ordered, coerced and bribed to go to Woodman's @ 1600 Main St, Waukesha to find me a suitable tomato for this fine day. I just gotta laugh at the lengths that some of our member's will go to. If I can not find a suitable candidate there then I will head off to the Waukesha Farmer's Market to see if anyone is bringing tomatoes up from Kentucky yet. I will go on my mission this weekend.

Thank you Gotch for tending to my BLT needs. You are awesome.

I had my first two of the season this morning. Might have another later tonight. I average at least one a day during tomato season and none the rest of the year. I refuse to buy any grocery store tomato imposters.

See post #7.

Are you going to make me stoop to slicing an oyster cracker in half, and go to a currant tomato?

I don't have any ripe big tomatoes yet either, but I probably have enough Galapagos Island cherry tomatoes for a couple BLTs. You know, wonderberries go well raw with ham. They'd probably be good on a BLW. :) (If you squash them to prevent them from rolling off.) I say this because we have lots of wonderberries (they outnumber the tomatoes in volume by a long shot right now). I've never tried them on a sandwich.

Those fluted tomatoes look excellent. What kind are they?
