Had the good fortune to be on the receiving end of a post card from a long way away today, all the way from WESconsin to be exact. Thanks @Cornelius_Gotchberg, and yes I agree that seeds have gone up a bit

Another Postcard from friend @Cornelius_Gotchberg arrived today. In answer to the question on the back, you are definitely right, spring has sprung here. Those that decide our seasons made it easy on themselves by sticking to the 1st of the month. So September 1 is the start of spring here.

That baby, sent from Saxon, WI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxon,_Wisconsin and 5.6 miles/~9 kms south of Lake Superior) on 08/24/2023, traveled 9,560 miles/15385 kms...as the crow flies...to get there!

Showing up at the right time of year, am I right?

Tomatojunction serial mailer struck again. ;)
I just received this card on Friday.
Pasty card.jpg
When living in Wisconsin, we used to have lunch many times with a guy from U.P. who my husband met through work and he used to talk about pasties and moijakka as Finnish dishes. Neither of those were familiar to us. Now when that card arrived, I started to ask about them in a genealogy group specialized in immigration.

Pasty actually originates from Cornwall in UK and Cornish pasty has protected status in Europe. Original Cornish pasty does not have carrots and is never made with fish. There are similar traditional pastries in Finland and usually those contain fish inside case made from rye flour.

Moijakka is old word for soup with meat or fish and vegetables in an area a bit north from us. Next time I meet my brother's in-laws, I have to ask from them if they do know what moijakka is.

Thanks again to @Cornelius_Gotchberg for the nice surprise :) Usually there are just junk mail and bills in our mailbox, so getting a post card from overseas makes me happy when picking the mail.

@rxkeith What is the difference between pastys and pasties?

The Gotch knows when to hold 'em/when to fold 'em/when to walk away/when to run!

That there's the latter...

@svalli, @Whwoz, @rxkeith; while postcarding is a lost art, it's (IMO) unbridled joy taking a stack of 'em to a small, rural post office, and informing the PO employee where they'll all (hopefully!) end up. And that THE largest Gift Store in The U.P. (Ironwood's Ben Franklin/https://ironwoodchamber.org/business/ben-franklin/) has 'em @3 for a buck? What's not to LUV, am I right?

Pasties? https://www.lehtospasties.com/pages/pastie-history. The Gotch learned to LUV 'em ~ 60 years ago when his Dear late Father used to take him and his older brother to 12 Foot Falls County Park (https://www.travelwisconsin.com/natural ... lls-200300), in northern Marinette County (just south of Iron Mountain, MI) where his maternal Grandmother was born, and his Swedish immigrant Great Grandfather worked as a miner before homesteading in Aurora TWSP/Florence County/WESconsin.

At the end of each summer, the lovely and long suffering Mrs. Gotch (and the husband who adores her) used to pick up ~45-50 to bring back south, giving ~ half away as Christmas gifts; a real treat that you's just can't get down this way. We'd take our big cooler to Joe's Pasty Shop (https://www.joespastyshopironwood.com/), just west of Ben Franklin, the day before departure, and they'd pack it up and keep it in their freezer overnight.

Now that his Dear parents (the beneficiaries of ~ 15-20) have passed, our purchase patterns have adjusted.

The Secret Ingredient which makes (IMO) the perfect Pasty? Rutabaga, featured only in the Cornish variety.

Be interested to see what @rxkeith puts on his; mustard (what kind), salsa, catsup/ketchup, or horseradish sauce.

@Cornelius_Gotchberg , thank you for your explanation, would not have thought of adding rutabaga to a pasty.

Would love to see postcards here at that price.

That traditional Finnish pastry is called kukko, which means also rooster, but linguists are not sure where that word comes from, since poultry is not traditionally used as filling in kukko-pie. Most common variations are kalakukko with fish and lanttukukko with rutabaga and pork. I believe that any Finn making pastys, would use also rutabaga in the filling.

gotch where is your courage?

pasty is something you eat.
pastie is something women wear when they aren't wearing much else.

i put ketchup/catsup on my pasty. some people like gravy.
one pasty connoisseur told me that a properly made pasty doesn't need anything on it to drown out the flavor.

calumet has a pasty fest each year during the summer. i will have to let the gotch know when the next one rolls around.

the ben franklin store in ironwood.
yep, been there when we worked in ironwood a couple years. i bought a stormy kromer for my son and me.
do ya have a kromer gotch?

Both Joe's and Rigoni's (https://www.rigonibakery.com) feature Finnish Pasties.

FWIW: https://ingebretsens-blog.com/pasties/# ... 20rutabaga.

Sheesh! It's not even 08:00 a.m., here, and I'm thinking about dinner....

Balanced with a sense of self-preservation...think there's any shortage of the latter in those first coupla blocks of Silver Street west of the Montreal River?

Ashamed to say no, (for the unitiated https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=5 ... 9&dpr=1.56) but I've passed that place (on Aurora Street, near Joe's Pasty Shop) hundreds of times, and visited their website.

The lovely and long suffering Mrs. Gotch's birthday is fast approaching, might be the year to pull the trigger!

The pleasure's all mine...and the Post Office folks, who get a kick out of helping cards begin journeys hither-n-yon....and not too many locations more YON than Down Under, am I right?

But sheesh, it must have taken the Scenic Route; it was mailed from Hurley, WI on June 24th!

Ok n answer to the enquiry on the back, yes it is time to plant radish here, but due to taste and texture not being popular with the tribe, it won't be happening.
