Astronauts stranded.
We've all heard about it unless you're living under a rock.
This just keeps getting worse and it's got you know who's name all over it.
Space suits not compatible.
Seriously.

Re: Astronauts stranded.
Hasn’t been a good stretch for Boeing. Yet another embarrassing moment for the US and more evidence of our general decline.
What I hear over and over again is that there is a lack of a quality workforce to fill skilled positions. Can’t build spaceships that work if there aren’t the right people available and ready to build them. We got to get back to valuing people that can do excellent work and reward achievement, discipline and merit.
Business and Government need to get together and take this bull by the horns to find a way to encourage and develop the talented people with the necessary aptitudes and abilities, but are somehow not finding their way into the skilled workforce.
This country still has a world of potential and potentially super capable people, but much of that capability isn’t being utilized or developed. What a shame.

I saw a guy proudly cut and put in several trimmer studs in a building the other day that were 1 inch short.
I told the person with me that back when I was framing house's that would get you run off.
She didn't know why.
I had to tell her that they were supposed to fit properly to do their job
It's not a space ship but it's definitely an attitude.

Re: Astronauts stranded.
We need more unionized apprentice training programs for future craftsmen.i.e,a nephew of us got to train in submerged welding ,not in the water but using “bead system “to fuse metal with electricity. Then he specializes in metal plate fusion using electricity.Interesting stuff.More interesting is he makes 150/hr.Guaranteed 8 hours whenever he suits up.High school technical courses got him started.

Re: Astronauts stranded.
More emphasis needs to be put on funding technical schooling. More emphasis on merit rather than politically correctness. Having worked around unionized apprentices, it all depends on the skill of the teachers rather than the group they belong to. Some were really good, some not so much. A well trained person is valuable; a person just putting their time is a waste. Send me a skilled hand not a quota to be filled.
edit: just thought of another response. The two universities that I have degrees from send me requests to make donations on a fairly regular basis. Several years ago an area tech school started up. Every time I get a money request from my alma maters, that request goes into the trash and I send a donation to the tech school instead.

The Unions in Texas are just a money grab.
Plus it's right to work state.
I worked around journeyman electricians for 2 years and I was having to explain their job.
They didn't understand relays and how they worked.
Not all but a bunch.

Re: Astronauts stranded.
It was a black woman that figured out the mathematics for some of this highly complicated stuff on escape velocity and re entry.
And without a computer.
The story is unbelievable.
I personally understand enough to get everyone killed.
But I'll give it a try.
They need to point the capsule in the correct direction to slow it down so it will fall out of orbit.
Then spin it the other way and come in at the right angle so they don't go in too hard and burn up or not hard enough and skip off the atmosphere and possibly into space.
That's a ton of math.
Space orbit is actually a fall that follows the curve of the planet at the right speed.

In 2019, Starliner's first uncrewed test flight didn't even make it to the station. The second test flight, in 2022, was deemed a success, but engineers later found worrying problems such as the use of adhesive tape that was flammable. Fixing these issues delayed its first flight with astronauts.

You want good engineers? Get rid of AA/diversity. Get rid of Athletic Scholarships. Put that money toward scouting smart kids for their IQ, not their 3 letter sports + k club + FBLA + perfect GPA. That is promoting conformists, belongers. Not brains.
The smart kids don't get straight As, they'll have a few oddball Bs because they don't even have to study at high school level. Merit based and creativity, not groupthink.

I heard about the poor astronauts. The spaceship is probably made from cheap, China made supplies and has a cheap made computer system in it and that's why it's having technical problems. Same reason airplanes are crashing. Same reason new made vehicles are being recalled.

Trust me I've been through the weeding process with huge companies.
No matter how smart or experienced you are if they're onto DEI being a while male isn't going to get you in the door no matter what.
Everyone at BP was shocked corporate didn't hire me.
First it was the the minority that was a joke.
Then it was the good Ole boy Buddy suck ups.
I called out the person interviewing me at work too many times for being stupid.
But all the people working in those gathering centers in Alaska loved me and they had my back.
In the end I know I did they.
right thing and so did they.
Remember BP is the one that dumped all the oil in the Gulf of Mexico.
If you want the truth I can tell you the truth.
I frigging hate BP.

Re: Astronauts stranded.
Certainly when I was in high school, it was not "what are you interested in" or "what do you want to do/want to be". It was "you have to keep you grades up to go to college. College graduates earn 25% more over the course of their lives than those with only a HS diploma." Or some such.worth1 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2024 9:18 amI think they need to figure out what a kid is going to be good at and put them on that path from the start.JRinPA wrote: ↑Tue Aug 27, 2024 5:39 pmConsider me under a rock. The goal they pushed was simply to go to college, and figure it out from there. But keep in mind, this all public school teachers...they never wanted to grow up and face the world, they WANTED to stay in school all their lives. PA has a plethora of state schools that are basically teacher's colleges. As long as you DON'T act or think independently, can memorize paragraphs, and will toe that party line, there is a place for you in K-12.

@JRinPA
I've listened to a couple of professors with PhDs that talked about the long road to getting to where they are especially with tenure.
One must certainly want to really want to spend their whole lives in school to do this.

Re: Astronauts stranded.
The funny thing is that making and fixing things is kind of fun. There’s certainly gratification when something gets made or fixed. Working on a rocket or spacecraft that takes people into space should be a wow kind of job. People should be fighting to get a job like that
I wonder how many American kids never even think about getting into something where they might make or build something?
I’m working on my 1998 GMC truck and trying to find a couple of parts for it. I just found them online. What a rush!
There’s all kinds of levels of expertise needed to design and build and run and maintain stuff like rockets or chemical plants or computer chip fabrication centers, but I don’t know why those jobs aren’t celebrated more. I think a guy or gal that can design, build, maintain or repair a computer chip, ethylene cracker, orbital vehicle or whatever is way more interesting and does more for the world than Taylor Swift, Jimmy Kimmel, Labron James, or Luke Bryan, yet those entertainers and athletes are the ones that get the accolades and hefty compensation.

Not just Boeing having trouble with getting rockets into space or back from space. Bechtel way, way over budget and time frames with their launch tower.
Not just Boeing having trouble with getting rockets into space or back from space. Bechtel way, way over budget and time frames with their launch tower.
, NASA awarded a contract to the Bechtel engineering firm to build and deliver a second mobile launcher (ML-2) for $383 million, with a due date of March 2023. That deadline came and went with Bechtel barely beginning to cut metal.
According to a new report from NASA's inspector general, the estimated cost of the tower, which is a little bit taller than the length of a US football field with its end zones, is now $2.7 billion. Such a cost is nearly twice the funding it took to build the largest structure in the world, the Burj Khalifa, which is seven times taller.

Much less pick up a tool and use it take something apart and see how it works even if it's broken.
