To me it was one of the biggest blunders General Montgomery ever dreamed up.

Even though he felt it was 90% successful.
11500 men lost their lives, more than the D day landings.
The movie A bridge too far is about the operation.

I don't really expect anyone to be very interested in this thread but military history is one on my favorite pass times.
I spent much of my early childhood and later on reading about the civil war.

What were these allied soldiers up against.
They were up against 2 Waffen SS panzer divisions.
The 9th and the 10th.
Not including other members of the regular army.
The Waffen SS panzers were the most brutal and feared unit's in the German military.
A panzer division is an armored division consisting of several units, many were brain washed Hitler youth.
The SS exclusively ran the concentration camps.
Waffen in German means weapon.
Panzer means armored literally means coat of mail like chain mail.

i read a lot of military history too.
monty had his own idea on how things should be done, and
was very persistent on trying to make others do things his way.
many people don't realize that it wasn't a harmonious relationship
the allies had with each other. monty gave eisenhower and others fits.
the brits, and the usa had different end game goals post war.
about war
all the vets i have spoken to that have been in the fighting share the same sentiment.
never go to war.

My moms married pops, she was from Bavaria.
All my uncles were nazis on moms side.
Uncle Kurt my name sake was a U boat captain.
Pops served in the Big Red 3 under Patton.
After some beers at our gatherings consensus was from German uncles that
We killed the wrong pig,Patton wanted to march with the surrendering Wehrmacht on to Moscow.Unfortunately Patton died in a crash never to “Kill the pig”

I've often wondered how things would have turned out lf Patton would have gotten his way.
Many Nazis were forced into being Nazis during that horrible time.

The twentieth century people got really efficient killing other people. Europe self destructed over the twentieth century with the two big wars. A lot of achievement, smarts and talent got caught up in and annihilated in these wars that were never going to bear any good fruit. I feel like some of the generals and leaders never saw the human side or the true long term costs.

Fast forward to now and Europe, Britain and Germany, most all of the region is in a death spiral. Negative birth rates, failing economies, political turmoil, no unifying ideology, the future looks bleak.

No unifying ideology is a real problem along with falling birth rates.
It doesn't have to be religion but something everyone believes in besides themselves.
But it can be religion of some sort as well.
National pride and the willingness to help out your fellow man.
I knew we were in trouble when I went to a highschool football game after 911 and the played the national anthem with the branches of the military involved.
Highschool kids were just walking around like no big deal.
As well as several adults.
Now we're being told national pride is evil.
