And Finally, On Day 17.....
WE HAVE POWER!
Around 10am this morning two power company trucks pulled up the drive. They were nice people too from some electric cooperative northeast of Atlanta. The crew chief said that we should have power around lunchtime. At 12:15 they threw the switch up on the transformer and TA DAAAAA! Let there be light!
Oh, happy day! Pickles turned off the generator and I turned on the breaker switches to the well and the hot water heater. Reefer and freezer got plugged back into the wall. We immediately started packing up all the extension cords and generator cables, gathering up all the mini mag flashlights, head lamps etc, moving out water buckets and getting back to normal.
Pickles had gone into town to fill the gas cans before we knew we were getting power today. That's OK though. We always keep them topped off in case of an emergency. Now they are.
Tomorrow I HAVE to water the garden as I had no energy or inclination to do that today. The hose has that massive pecan trunk laying on it so I'll have to cut that hose section out and put the hose back together. I'm pretty sure I have extra hose connectors in the shed.
The next thing to deal with is the possibility of the first light frost Wednesday or Thursday morning. It's just the beans I need to cover. We're still picking from one row and the second row down the other side of the bed is in full flower. Some row cover over the netting tunnel should work. Oops, forgot about the yellow squash. Gotta cover that too. The brassicas will be fine without help.
There's been a list kept of things that need to be done a bit differently next time as well as some things that need to be added to the preps. But all in all, other than the inconvenience we did pretty well. It was the biggest prep test yet. The one biggie is to get a larger generator that can handle the well too. That would solve the largest issue of not having water. Not paying thousands for a Generac or other though. Of course, in really extreme circumstances where there's no gas for the generator it would be handy to have a hand pump at the well but I don't think there's room for another pipe in that 4" casing.
Pickles has the washing machine going as we speak. Laundry will have to dry on racks and hangers for now as a huge limb took down the clothes line and poles. Gotta remove all those branches and buck up the trunk before resetting the poles.
And so ends another adventure. I just can't imagine what those people up in western NC are going through. At least we have a roof over our heads, a change of clothes, working vehicles in the driveway, a freezer full of food and now power and water. God has truly been good to us and we are so grateful.

he is the type that wants to be prepared for everything. shipped from lehmans in kidron
ohio, amish country. $2600 that cost. he also has a pretty expensive solar panel set up.
neighbor has one of those fancy generators that runs on propane. self starts once a month.
pricey, oh yeah. six or seven grand it was.
life gets a little easier for you now.

I am so impressed @GoDawgs how well you managed with your preps, and keeping it together without power for 17 days. You and Pickles are an inspiration to us all.
