You people in the nicer areas can go eat technicolor compost

Re: How's your weather?
Rain yesterday and more today. The technicolor compost has dissolved into the ground. Just an accumulated 1" of rain here but more on the way. We need a bit more. A tornado watch was just issued for some counties south of here until 6pm. Recent mid to upper 80's will revert to low 70's after this mess passes. And so it goes.

Re: How's your weather?
At least the latest storm, stretching from GA to NY, looks like it will mostly stay to the south of me.
Temps will be in the low 20s for a few more nights, then predicted to be above freezing for a good stretch after that. The garden is likely too rain saturated to risk planting anything now. In a few days, maybe I'll do some peas.

Re: How's your weather?
It was raw out there today, raining lightly most of the day, and maybe getting in the low 50s, though it was still in the high 40s, every time I looked. It finally stopped raining around 4 pm, so I took my trash out - I didn't do it last week, due to even worse weather, but I don't produce very much trash, so I could have skipped it again! The next 2 days are supposed to stay in the 40s, with considerable wind, and the first 2 days of April I won't be getting any rain, but tomorrow night is supposed to be the freeze night.

Shoutout to our friends in central/south US who got the crazy amount of rain from an 'atmospheric river' in the past week, not to mention tornadoes. I hope no one nor your animals was harmed and your properties not badly damaged. Rivers crested yesterday so here's wishing all of you a stable and ordinary spring from here on in, with only the right amount of rain.

Re: How's your weather?
We bottomed out at 45°ish. Not sure, the local airport NWS weather seems to be permanently down or closed.
We have fantastic weather in the forecast through Easter. Nothing more than the low 80°s and nothing less than the mid 50°s. No rain. Lots of sun. Comfortable airmasses. Most everything currently in the garden should be happy with the upcoming weather. The peppers are really blossoming and I see a good fruit set and the eggplant are just beginning to bloom. Everything is blooming at the right moment, although, the cucumbers like the beans took a battering in the cold winds this past weekend and Monday. The two cucumbers I direct seeded a month after the others look better since they were still pretty low to the ground. The tomatoes look pretty much unscathed, thankfully. I had them tied up pretty snug.
I’m glad for the drier air and the slightly cooler nights, helps slow down the tomatoes a bit and makes for more robust blossoms and stems.

Federal cuts have been impacting NWS offices across the country. That may explain why yours is down.

Re: How's your weather?
We got 2.6" of rain over the past two days without any nasty weather. That's good news! The upper 80's we've had the past week will now be 70's with a couple of 68's thrown in there for this week and lows going from low 60's to the 40's. Much more seasonal for this part of April.

Re: How's your weather?
Tonight is supposed to be the freeze for me, but only 29 or 30 degrees...maybe. Still, with all this rain, I haven't needed water, so I already turned the water off, and bled the pipes to the outside, to be safe. I only went out briefly today, to return the cans, and it is very windy, with gusts in the 40s, and with temps in the low 40s, so I'm sure they are talking about wind chill today! Every day is well below average, with more rain Friday, into Saturday. I won't complain, since we still need rain, but I can do without the cold.

Re: How's your weather?
That’s what I was thinking as well.
As far as I know, the local airport weather station is some sort of automated station with no NWS personal on site. The station has gone down periodically and frequently for years, any “bad” weather tends to knock it out of commission for hours or even days, but this time it has been weeks. Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 knocked it out with the last reading on the wind at 79mph before the station was out for weeks.
The airport gets general aviation traffic and a few corporate jets, but no regular commercial air service currently. I’ve flown out of there many times in a friend’s Cessna and there’s no tower or local air traffic control. Air traffic control is run out of Houston 50 something miles away. The runway is 7,000’x100’ so not maybe the typical small airport runway.
The airport weather station was more of a convenience for me as it cannot be more than four miles from my house. I could get a fairly good bead on my own conditions and rainfall even though it wasn’t exact.
Weather Underground has or had links to much closer personal weather stations, but Weather Underground doesn’t always run that well on my Ipad. Maybe it’s time to look at WU again.
I do have an exterior thermometer attached to a door frame near my back door, but it picks up a little heat from the house and deck. Accuweather for our town is often less accurate on temperatures to my location than the local airport was. Accuweather must get their data from the opposite side of town perhaps closer to the gulf. The gulf often has an enormous impact on temperature here based on distance from the gulf, but at greater distance the effect is diminished.
I believe only gardeners care this much about weather. Kind of important to get a handle on considering how impactful temperatures are on things like tomato fruit set, the varying cold hardiness of vegetables, etc.

Re: How's your weather?
The NWS has their stuff at Bush Field in Augusta so that's where the local news gets their forecasts. However the airport is right along the Savannah River so that always affects the temp forecasts, especially the lows which are moderated a bit by the river. Out here a few counties away it gets a bit colder.

Re: How's your weather?
About now, I bet Bush field there in Augusta is extra busy with the corporate jet set. I saw that Jordan Speith and Tom Kim are paired together, both being Dallasites, wonder if they took the same plane over?GoDawgs wrote: ↑Tue Apr 08, 2025 5:19 pm The NWS has their stuff at Bush Field in Augusta so that's where the local news gets their forecasts. Re: How's your weather?
Most of the corporates go to Daniel Field, a small airport outside the edge of downtown Augusta. Delta and American use Bush Field. But the skies overhead will be be busy this weekend.
At least the weather should be typical... one windy day, one chilly morning and one rainy day. Wind and rain Friday and a chilly 41 Sunday morning.

Re: How's your weather?
Well, it IS nice to know when to expect a freeze, so we can cover stuff! Or decide to let it go, or not plant in the first place if it's early in the season. I for one like to know if there's a tornado watch in my area! A tornado is not the kind of thing I like to learn about when it's outside of my window! And those have been known to travel right through downtown around here.karstopography wrote: ↑Tue Apr 08, 2025 1:06 pm

Of all of the things that could be cut, I wish they'd keep the programs that are actually of service to the taxpaying public. But then again, no one is asking me, right?

Re: How's your weather?
My goodness, the weather forecast is important for gardeners, but even more so for fishing, or boating, or flying a plane. You could get messed up pretty badly without the foreknowledge. Weather forecast is one of the huge boons of the 21st century. You really notice it on times when you know there's a storm coming but there's no clue, locally. What if you were planning a picnic?
So many lives have been saved by weather forecasting, it's no joke.
Not even to mention that weather is the greatest, safe topic of conversation.
Meanwhile microclimate is such a thing eh. Wouldn't I love to have a full on weather station...
I did notice there's a type of home weather station, not terribly expensive, that measures barometric pressure as well as your temperatures, and that will actually give you warning if it's going to rain at your location, for example.

Barrier has been broken for the year. I only saw 98 at my closest weather station (2 miles) but close enough.
