I bought some Earthbox stands for an old relative who had knee surgery in the past and can't kneel. I should have thought ahead and buy them off season while on sale. The official stands are probably the most overpriced thing I ever bought.

Which inspired me to build my own. I looked at some online pics for ideas, but didn't have a clear idea. Took a whole 6-7hrs to build two of it, making it up as I go along. After making the third one I realized it's super easy and can be made in an hour or less with the right tools. But I understand why they have to charge so much, considering some people aren't able to build it for various reasons.

Basically for the top frame where you slot the Earthbox into. All you have to make sure is, regardless of what wood plank thickness you're using, just create an rectangular frame with an empty space of 28in by 12.5in. As long as it's 28"x12.5", the Earthbox will fit through snugly. Then attach four legs to the thing, and have some bracing for the legs to keep them sturdy.

You can use any plank size, I think treated 2x3 is better and lighter. I used treated 2x4 which imo is way heavier and sturdy than it needs to be. Maybe 2x2 works too to make the frame, but I rather use two and double stack them to make sure they can hold the containers weight with all the soil and water.

Optionally attach some caster wheels. I think 3 inch wheels are ideal, though if you want to roll them over grass easily I think at least 4 inch is required. 2 inches wheel are possible if you want to save money, but only for smooth hard surfaces.

I'm not sure this pvc hoop shenanigan was a good idea. To cut it short, I realized you can simply use a longer screw to screw pvc pipes directly onto the wood.

Great job, @maxjohnson! Funny thing - when I first looked at that photo, before scrolling down to read the post, my first thought was, that I'd try to make that wooden one! I like that idea of making a hoop house over it.

Hand made stands are very impressive. I added two more EB stands to my collection this spring as two boxes were in spots where leaning down to them was difficult. I love the stands but they are indeed expensive. I spent a whole evening putting them together because you have to work to get all the holes lined up and then twist the nuts with a wrench to tighten. Was very hard in my arthritic hands! Wish I could make them myself but at this time in my life they are a godsend and I don’t regret the money for the convenience.
If you have no other alternative I highly recommend them! Good on the back and I don’t lose the lettuces and salad type veggies to the critters. Adding tall stakes outside them makes a great way to add shade cloth or netting to keep bugs away.

Now I know what to do with those 3/4" to 1/2" PVC pipe converter. The official Earthbox tomato netting trellis can slot into it, or regular 1/2" conduit. Very happy with this addition.

With this 7ft tall trellis, the whole thing will definitely get blown over by the wind once it is top heavy. So will need to be put it against a wall or something to brace it from falling over.

We gots a problem with the crud from above.It moves the spores down.A good nuke after relocations.Nice work!
