First cucumber of the season to grip onto a support is Tasty Green.

Tasty Green and Garden Oasis are my first cucumbers to bloom.

Down to six plants. One of the direct seeded ones, a Japanese type, got eaten, the young stem sliced in two.

The cucumbers are going strong this year. The only one that isn’t quite as popular as the rest is Poinsett 76. I haven’t eaten a Poinsett 76 yet. No sign of pickle worms on any of them.

I’ve given away 90% + of the cucumbers. How many cucumbers can any two people eat? Not all that many.

My favorite way to eat them is to coarsely grate them, squeeze almost all the moisture out of the grated ball of cucumber, and mix that with plain greek yogurt, microplaned garlic, dill, lemon juice, mint, olive oil, and salt. Tzatziki sauce. Tzatziki sauce is good with many things.

May 31, NE Texas. I'm picking and enjoying China Jade and Tokyo Green, two or three most days. I have 4 vines of each trellised against a south-facing garage wall. The insect pests have not found them yet, but I'm sure they will before too long. The cucumber beetles were very well zeroed in on last year's vines, which were planted in another spot. The change of venue must have briefly bought some time.

Both varieties have been healthy and productive. Planted them out 17 April. They are in 20-gallon grow bags, 2 plants in each bag. It would have been easier to prune and manage them with only one plant per container, which was my original intention.

Tomorrow I'll plant two more varieties as a "succession crop." Diva (parthenocarpic and gynoecious, from Tomato Grower's Supply) and Sooyo-Nishiki which is a standard monoecious growth habit, from Whitwam Organics. First time growing both of these.

I composted a big plastic grocery sack full of soggy, limp and nasty over the hill cucumbers yesterday. Five cucumber plants are producing too many cucumbers for us to eat before they spoil and we are sharing cucumbers with my wife’s coworkers and family.

Pickle worms are also claiming a few cucumbers.

It always pains me to have to do that, but sometimes there is no way around it. I slink out to the compost pile like a thief in the night, hoping the God of Groceries is not watching.
