Re: North Florida Gardening
Up to 2 pickings a week on the Dragon’s Tongue beans, and popped some more seeds in.
The melons creep up on me every time. I think they’re just vining like crazy … move a leaf, and there’s a softball size melon under it. Getting cherries, of course; a handful a day. Excited about Nicky Crain and King Pineapple - both new to me.

Re: North Florida Gardening
Hi, all,
I need help. The new house we are building is in Sarasota county. We need to choose 4 trees to plant on the property to pass inspection.
We like all kind of citrus, mangoes, figs, persimmons and dremed about having them. But, as I stated reading more and more I realize that the squirrels will be picking most of them.
Can you recommend what fruits can we plant without loosing most to pests.
I will be growing tomatoes in containers as well. But I can pick them before fully riped.
Please help.

Re: North Florida Gardening
Grapefruit and Meyer Lemons generally get passed over by the critters for oranges and satsumas, that was our experience with growing citrus. The squirrels didn’t bother any of the citrus, but the opossums and raccoons surely did.

I grow plums, figs & citrus without much predation. Figs are just about the easiest things to grow; very tough once established.Ella NJ wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 4:26 pm Hi, all,

Does Sarasota have enough chill hours for plums?PlainJane wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 7:21 pmI grow plums, figs & citrus without much predation. Figs are just about the easiest things to grow; very tough once established.Ella NJ wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 4:26 pm Hi, all,

Re: North Florida Gardening
Hi, thank you for responces.
I am not sure about plums. I am not on the beach, about 10 minutes drive. So it is milder than further inland.
My in-laws were about 40 minutes inland and it was cooler. I remember that their figs were all picked by squirrels before fruits completely ripened. Grapefruits were safe.
My husband wants parcimons.

Getting together the restaurant delivery, but not sure what to do with the massive Nicky Crain and King Pineapple fruits. I guess they can always sauce them.
Finally pulled a couple of really nice Vorlon. One is pristine and will go to Rue. The other has a slight crack so I’ll probably keep it for myself.

PJ, you're getting an avalanche of tomatoes and beans. I'm awash in turnips. Trade ya? LOL!

Re: North Florida Gardening
I tried 3 this year- Cosmic Burst (best one for me), Raspberry Burst and Showstopper.
Showstopper is visually stunning but cracks too much in my conditions.
Raspberry Burst is manageable, about 2 ft, decent flavor, good counter life.
Maglia Rosa is still the flavor queen amongst the cherries I’ve grown.

Is that a Ha'Ogen Dessert melon? The rind looks the same. They're pretty good. I grew those in 2015.PlainJane wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 7:07 pm Up to 2 pickings a week on the Dragon’s Tongue beans, and popped some more seeds in.
