Which of your tomatoes sprouted first, this year?
Which of your tomatoes have sprouted the fastest, this year?
My first (of ~104 kinds) was surprisingly my Galapagos Island (from fruits that survived several good freezes). Usually, if I remember, maybe over half the tomatoes sprout before Galapagos Island does. I hope this faster sprouting turns out to be a genetic change. Not only was it first, but lots of seeds sprouted in the cell too!
The Galapagos Island tomatoes from the 5-chamber fruits (which were harvested before any freezes happened, I believe) have not sprouted, yet. (They sprouted later in the same day, actually!)
Anyway, next came Juliet F2, followed by Blue Berries, and Esterina F1. I checked again, today, and more had sprouted, including Napoli, and some others.
Well, the order on those could be off, as I saw the first of them all at once (the order is based on how sprouted they were).
Lots of kinds sprouted today, apparently. I went and wrote them down. So, here's what's sprouted so, far on my first day finding sprouted tomatoes:
B.S.X.
Blue Berries
Brad's Aromic Grape
Cherokee Yellow Red Pear
Chocolate Chestnut
Cosmic Eclipse
Esterina F1
Eva
Galapagos Island (5-chamber)
Galapagos Island (antifreeze; this seems to be the first one to have sprouted)
Green Gables
Homestead
Isis Candy
Juliet F2
Kellogg's Beefsteak
Kellogg's Breakfast
Malinovoe Chudo
Mexican Yellow cross F3
Napoli
Near-multiflora Brandyboy cross F3
Ovita (from saved seeds)
Porter
Sausage
Wild Tiger

Estler's Mortgage Lifters were the first up. I purposely started them early, though, so I could let those who wanted seeds know about germination %. (100%!) Of the ones I started next only KBX & Big Zebra sprouted and survived. Started a 3rd round. Chocolate Cherry was first up this time.

The yellow pear popped up before any of the others, and have grown the fastest, so far. Now, all but one variety of 20 is up, in 6 days.

Ciliegino Cherry was the first to pop up after about 3 days...but EdieJ Estler's Mortgage Lifter was breaking the surface a few days later, showing excellent germination. Big Beef Hybrid were early and vigorous seedlings as well.
It's not what you gather, but what you scatter, that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Work Release Paste, Hungarian Heart, and Black Krim (even though I haven't grown it since 2013) were the first to germinate.
Ironically, the "new to me" varieties that I am most keen to grow this summer (Bellestar, Hungarian Italian Paste, and Jewish) have still barely begun to germinate!

I usually get faster and better germination on my own saved seeds. This year, though, I don't see that pattern in mine. I wonder if it's because I froze all my (dry) tomato seeds for a few days before planting them, including the new-to-me ones. That's the main thing I've done differently, this year, anyhow. Well, one exception is Brad's Atomic Grape; I didn't freeze those, and they sprouted fast, too.
I froze them as an experiment, since volunteer seeds usually freeze over the winter, and they tend to have advantages over direct-seeded plants. Plus, some (also dry) pepper seeds we had frozen before were more vigorous than the ones I didn't freeze that year. Those pepper seeds (the dry-frozen ones) didn't sprout faster; but they did grow faster and produce well.

Brandywine Cherry and Aunt Lillian's Heirloom. For the dwarf tomatoes it was Desert Star and Round Robin.

My Stupice are always first. Usually 3 days with warmish soil.
