Re: Summer Corn.
Why would they spend time and $$ planting if they don't give crops the nutrition they need to reach full potential? What a waste!

Is that dry land corn without any center pivot or other irrigation?

I have ran seed drills and fertilizer spreading equipment.
Sometimes you miss a spot mostly on corners and so on.

No irrigation.
My cousins irritate wheat peanuts and sometimes black eyed peas.
Old family farm goes back to before the civil war I think.
My grandma was born on it in the 1800's.

Re: Summer Corn.
Good tips pondgardener! I have to do a second fertilization for my first planting and I'll be sure to use a balanced fertilizer. The corn is looking great.
Something like ammonium sulfate, how do you apply it? I use the tablespoon measure and sprinkle it lightly around each plant. Probably 1/2 TB per plant.

ponyexpress , these sites might be of help and/or interest:

I weigh out the nitrogen for each row, draw a shallow furrow down the row 6" from the plants, sprinkle the nitrogen in the furrow, cover it and water it in. Rinse and repeat. I consider a row to be 1' wide and mine are 18' long so 18 sq ft. Then I do the math to break down the fertilizer amount to what would be needed for one row. I've been using 2 oz per 18' row.

Re: Summer Corn.
I fertilized and watered the corn today.
It is 3 feet tall so far.
Also pruned all the dead stuff and vines off my tomato plants as they are still setting fruit.
Fertilized and watered them too.
The sun golds that didn't split are amazingly sweet and fruity.
I think the corn looks nice in the container.
Will probably get more involved in it next year or maybe even this year, still have plenty of time if I can just find sweetcorn seeds.

Worth, last year we planted a bi-color called "Trinity" and only used 1/2 the package. We went with all Silver Queen this year. Would you be interested in the Trinity seeds? I liked it but DH just prefers SQ since his parents & grandparents grew it too.

Re: Summer Corn.
Thank you very much for the kind offer but I need to do something with my root and grass over grown raised beds before I do anything.
It is going to take a lot of hard work to redo these beds.
The cedar elm roots have literally taken over the things the soil is like a hair ball of roots and they suck the beds dry as fast as I can water them.

Re: Summer Corn.
Boy, oh boy, you DO have some work ahead of you. I've got root problems like that in several of my beds from grape and crape myrtle roots. If they don't get broadforked every year, and preferably both spring and fall, they're a mess to deal with. I still don't want to think about the first time they got forked after sitting fallow for two years.

Some of the corn is up to 4 feet tall.
Had no idea it would grow this well.
Flabbergasted.

Ours is about 6-1/2' feet tall, tasselling & starting to make baby ears. Time to hit them with Surround according to the package directions. I'm a little worried the Surround will interfere with pollination.

OK can I cry now? ... The ears are making lots of silks, tassels are full of pollen and we have not had a least bit of wind in 3 days and it won't stop raining. How is it going to pollinate in this? Is there anything we can do manually with everything soaking wet?

worth1 thanks! It is sunny right at the moment but still no breeze. If it doesn't rain between now and in the morning I might try shaking the stalks and keep my fingers crossed.

Re: Summer Corn.
Got home today and the soil in my no drain holes corn container was shrinking up from the sides, 'watered well and walked away.
It was two days since last watering.
The stuff is growing beyond my wildest dreams.
I cant express to you all how much I love a huge field of corn.
Used to go out into them as a small child and get lost in the rows of corn.

Calling my cat Smokey to come in for the evening I make up songs and sing to her.
She likes it and meows back.
While doing this I noticed some of my corn leaves over the the top of my truck waving in the breeze.

We've had a breezy day, hubby says there is still quite a bit of pollen to fall & he's afraid that if he sprays it will keep the pollen from adhering. Said he didn't see any bugs hanging around so I'm holding my breath. Is yours getting close to tasselling yet?
