Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
I’m way behind on my cucumbers I planted the ones I grown indoors to early and they didn’t make it so I just threw a bunch of seeds in the ground last few days of May and they are just now popping up. A lot of my tomatoes have small flower buds still and my red and green bell peppers are being slow no flowers yet . But weather is finally turning around

My 1st tomato of the season,4th of july hybrid grown in cement blocks.brownrexx wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 6:13 am I am in PA and have never had ripe tomatoes before July at the earliest no matter how early I have planted them. If I plant too early and it's cold at night, they just slow down.
One year as an experiment I planted one plant a couple of weeks earlier than another one. I protected it with plastic and gallon jugs or warm water but the later planted one grew faster and they both produced their first ripe tomato on the exact same day so I don't rush the season any more.
I missed my old record by 2 days (june 15th last year 1st)

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
A very large percentage of my tomatoes froze, earlier this year, and I lost several that weren't replaced, but I replanted the others that died, and most of them grew back. I discovered today that I'm actually quite a ways ahead of where I was this time last year! Most of my plants got transplanted on time, but a few got late starts or other setbacks, such as Marzano Fire, Black Cherry, SunChocola F2, Black Krim x Garnet, Malakhitovaya Shkatulka, and Bosque Blue Bumblebee. They're looking good, though. Marzano Fire is the youngest and last to have sprouted.

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
This year we had a Polar Vortex event on May 10 with a low of 30°. I planted my tomato seedlings out on May 15. I just don't enjoy trying to protect plants in the cold so I wait.

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
Have found that no matter when a tomato plant sets the tomatoes they will ripen in their own good time. Cherries are setting now but will ripen when they are ready. Normally don’t get most large tomatoes ripe here until August and late ones ripen in September. Might get a few in July for first flush.
Most of my plants are larger than usual since I started them a little earlier but waited till all frost was done to plant end of May. Will be interested to see which ripen first of my 53 varieties!.

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
Thanks SQWIB! You inspired me - I need to get on my game and get plants in the ground earlier.
I am always slow and late and don't tend to transplant until May. And thus never get fruit until late August. I want June and July tomatoes!

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
Every year there's Plan A, where you seed early and plant out early or on time, get a good harvest. Then there's Plan B. Some or all of the seedlings in Plan A don't work out, or normal plant-out is inhibited by weather, etc. Second seeding, late planting, hoping for a late harvest. Plan C is for the ones that didn't live through the second seeding or plant-out, or that were planted as an afterthought. . The third-round seedling is put in the ground with the hopes of just a few fruits to sample the variety before frost.
This year I had two plants at Plan A, 19 at Plan B, and 24 in Plan C.

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
Well, not to torpedo my own theory about the cold weather, but this looks like it will be my first ripe tomato:
It's an Orange Paruche, and if it's ripe in a week it will be just a few days early from the expected date. This is a plant where I bought the seedling...we'll have to see if the others I bought also come in on time...it may be my late plants turn out to be the seedlings I grew and their late development is due to my ineptitude at growing seedlings.

It looks like tomatoes have a biological clock?brownrexx wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 6:13 am One year as an experiment I planted one plant a couple of weeks earlier than another one. When they say "65 days" do they mean from the day a seed germinated or from a time of transplant?

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
All my plants are late this year. They are barely beginning to bloom now. I gave up on early tomatoes due to changing and unpredictable weather patterns. Spring is always too wet or too cold, especially the month of may.

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
yup ...at least 2 weeks later this year here as well …..nothing particularly wrong just a cool later development type year .
Not good for the impatient tomato gardener who has suffered the long off season for garden fresh ..etc.

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
Well, I've gotten 1 tomato each from two of my Orange Paruche plants--right on time, and my Sun Golds look like they are going to be on time also, so that's furthering my theory that it's my home-grown seedlings that are behind schedule.
Beyond that, the Orange Paruches were terrible! I expected them to be sweet like Sun Gold, but they aren't, so far.

Re: Who Else Has Late Plants?
This has been a very weird year. I didnt start any seeds this year as I waited too long to get supplies and then couldn't get them. I bought seedlings at a nearby orchard and seed supply. We had some late frosts and freezes and I decided to just wait until the last week or so of May to plant. Due to rain and what not It ended up being the first week of June when I planted. It was dry enough to plant and the forecast was for several days of rain thereafter. The rain never came and didnt for the next 3 weeks. I had to water every day but still the plants pretty much sat there. Finally we got an inch of rain and the plants shot up about halfway up the cages. Then came another couple of weeks of hot and no rain. The last week we had 2 and a half inches and mostly the plants are at the top of the cages. Through all of this time I thought I would be lucky to have a ripe tomato the first week of August. It ended up being the first week of July and I have picked probably a couple dozen so far and mostly large good looking tomatoes. I don't know that I would want to repeat what i did this year but it has worked out really well so far.

Got my first tomato harvest yesterday: SOTW, Burpee Earliana, Sungold, Isis Candy, and Galapagos Antifreeze. Loving it!
