Yes Stump quickly rose to the top of my "must grow" list for those very reasons. Girl Girl's Weird Thing is high on the list too.

I love Girl Girl's WT too. (I wonder if Remy ever grew it?) Stump is an excellent tomato , so I think those growing it wont be sorry.

I don't know if Remy ever grew it. I did send her some seeds so I hope that it made it into her garden for her to taste.Ginger2778 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 20, 2021 12:06 pmI love Girl Girl's WT too. (I wonder if Remy ever grew it?) Stump is an excellent tomato , so I think those growing it wont be sorry.

This looks similar to my favorite which is pink Brandywine. How does the taste compare?

I would say different but just as luscious. Generally its more productive than Brandywine.
Its funny, on her seed site she actually said she doesn't like Brandywine very much, yet SotW was her very favorite.

Ginger2778 where did she garden? I love my Brandywine's but I live in PA less than 100 miles from the area where the Brandywine was developed. I have found that people trying to grow Brandywine in other areas are not always impressed with it.

Ginger2778 Maybe that is why she was not as impressed by Brandywine. It really seems to like my area for the best flavor. It is not super productive but I really it. Last year I also grew the Red Brandywine and it was more productive and DH and I both liked it.

Re: Memorial Grow out for Remy, Stump of the World
Brandywine does great for me here and I really like it but I too prefer Stump and a couple of others because for me, Brandywine can have a funky aftertaste that I do not enjoy. Some years it is great and then I get 2-3 years with this great start to it's flavor, a wonderful middle and then this horrid to me finish. Not everyone tastes it, but I do and I don't care for it. So given that, I can understand why Remy preferred Stump of the World over Brandywine.

It took me 15 years to finally compare the two side-by-side in a season with perfect weather. To me the flavors are quite similar, with Brandywine Sudduth being stronger tasting. So strong, that it cannot be an every day or every occasion tomato. SOTW has the perfect strength for an every day tomato.
The one drawback with BS is that it extremely finicky. Too hot, too cold, too sunny, too wet, and the flavor isn't there. One in five years I get the most powerful richest tasting tomato that I know of. SOTW will usually taste great in 4 of 5 years.

Re: Memorial Grow out for Remy, Stump of the World
Tormato that is interesting. I have also noticed that Brandywine Suddeth is variable with production too. One year I only got about 5 tomatoes from my huge plant, but they were GOOD. Last year I grew Red Brandywine and we really liked that flavoe. DH asked me to grow more of them this year.
Another problem with Brandywine is that they produce late in the season and that is exactly when Late Blight can appear if weather conditions are right for it. One year I lost my Brandywines without harvesting a single ripe tomato.

I'm happy with production. It's one of only a few varieties, out of 150+ a year, where I shake the plant daily. I once had a BS plant with a 14 flower truss, and 5 of them set. Overall, a typical plant usually produces about 15 tomatoes. I'm fine with this "not every day tomato" amount. I'd like to get 30 out of an every day tomato, such as SOTW.brownrexx wrote: ↑Sun Feb 21, 2021 2:07 pm @Tormato that is interesting. I don't know for sure she grew it, but I grew GGWT last year from seeds I got from Remy, so maybe she did.MissS wrote: ↑Sat Feb 20, 2021 4:17 pmI don't know if Remy ever grew it. I'm probably a little behind on news, but I didn't know Remy can only be thought of in memory. 2020 put me a year behind. I grew stump for many years from seed obtained from Remy. I loved the tomato and respected Remy greatly. I hope covid wasn't the culprit. It hasn't seemed fair to me. My wife and I are a few months from being eighty years old and we both survived covid last year. We have lost much younger friends and acquaintances to the disease. We have lost more to the scourge of cancer though.
While I believe Stump Of The World is a great tomato, the story of Ben Quisenberry naming it in homage to the biblical "Root Of Jesse" is compelling.

I think folks would love to see photos and progress of the Stump seedlings. How are you all doing with yours?

Haven't started yet but it won't be long. Pepper seeds going on the heat mat tomorrow & tomato seeds in a week or so.
