Re: Fishing thread
Got some of those flies I’ve been tying in action today. Sheepshead are tasty. So are redfish.

More fish and more flies. Jack Garstside gets credit for the pattern, a soft hackle streamer. I add my own touches like Icelandic Sheep’s wool and eyelash yarn. Puffballs of marabou when fresh off the vise and collapsed pencils when wet, these only look good when swimming.

Sauger fishing is starting to pick up with the cooler temps.

Re: Fishing thread
@wildcat62 looks a lot like a walleye to my untrained eye. Do sauger eat anything like walleye?

Yes, side by side on a plate you could not tell the difference. Sauger, Saugeye & Walleye are all in the same family.karstopography wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 10:59 am @wildcat62 looks a lot like a walleye to my untrained eye. Do sauger eat anything like walleye?

Re: Fishing thread
I really got the saltwater fishing bug when I lived in Surfside Beach. I had a kayak and could literally drag it 50 yards across the sand and mud behind my house into a great marsh loaded with redfish.
Now that I moved off the beach, I still go out to the various marshes, bays and estuaries around here and go on fish hunts, looking for fish sign, bait behavior, reading structure, it’s a puzzle that changes with each tide. @worth1 Since you lived around here you likely already know we have many, many thousands of acres of accessible public water nearby. It’s really quality water and a wet wilderness where you can still get away from the crowds if you want. I’d probably continue to fish even if the state made it all catch and release, but I really like eating some of my catch. Not so much on eating most freshwater fish, with a few exceptions. Texas Parks and Wildlife does a great job managing the resource in the public saltwater. There’s a lot of various species of fish that supports a sustainable harvest for the present and things look good going into the future, at least in Texas. Most of these inshore fish, with a few exceptions, here really don’t migrate more than a few miles seasonally so we don’t have to try to coordinate with other states managing the fish population. Fall and winter is my favorite time of year to fish.

Re: Fishing thread
You might try this with your next mackerel.
Doesn't look hard at all and most certainly delightful to your loved ones.

Re: Fishing thread
Good day out. Sunny, relatively light winds. Lots of fish caught, but several just barely too small to retain. Sand trout don’t have to be any particular size to retain.

Another great January fishing day. January might be my favorite month to fish.

Re: Fishing thread
Nice redear. When will that fish spawn out in your water. Looks about 3-4 weeks out. Going to be a plump one.
