Re: Started Some New (to me) Micros
Of the five new micro tomato varieties I started on January 5th the first one to have fruit starting to color up is Pigmy. The plant is 12"x12" now and has three cherry tomato clusters on it.

I went ahead and picked the ripe one last night. It was 1" across and weighed 0.3 oz or 9 grams. It had pretty good flavor, a tad on the acidic side. The rest in that cluster are coloring up fast.

Re: Started Some New (to me) Micros
Today the first Monteka micro tomato was ready. Oh boy! Until today I hadn't really noticed the size of the cherries in the first two clusters.

Here is the first fruit of the labor. Measuring 1.25" across it was larger than Pigmy and it weighed 0.5 oz (15g).

I went ahead and saved the seed from it since it was so perfect and pretty but I did eat the flesh and where Pigmy had a slight acid tang to it, the Monteca seems to have a slight sweet taste to it without sacrificing a nice tomato flavor. They're ripening fast so in a few days I'll have more for a better and more rounded taste test.

Re: Started Some New (to me) Micros
Today I got the first two tomatoes off the 'Florida Petite'. This plant is 10" tall and 12-14" wide, happily growing in a one gallon nursery pot. It was seeded Jan 5 and transplanted into it's pot on Feb 13. The slightly larger one weighs 0.7 oz or 19g.
Nice size cherry tomatoes! These are a hair over 1 1/4" wide and pretty tasty.

Tomorowr I think I'll get the first two from 'Baby'.

So when growing indoors like this, what do you do about pollination? I am actually growing some cherries in an AeroGarden that was given to me, I had to order the tomato seeds from them and they sell a little electric toothbrush thing so you can "be the bee" and buzz the flowers.

Re: Started Some New (to me) Micros
I bought a cheap battery-op toothbrush at Walmart (about $3) and use that to buzz flowers. Since I read here that tomato flowers can pollinate themselves while still in bud, I start lightly buzzing clusters of fat buds on the stems right behind the buds. Once the flowers open I give them one more buzz and that seems to work just fine.Setec Astronomy wrote: ↑Sat Apr 09, 2022 9:08 am So when growing indoors like this, what do you do about pollination? Re: Started Some New (to me) Micros
Well, I'm not sure you have to buzz them or whether using a small brush for pollen transfer or just picking a bloom and rubbing it on the other blooms would work just as well.
We need other indoor growers to chime in here with what they do.

Re: Started Some New (to me) Micros
I've been doing some seed saving from these first micros. So far I've got some from all five but want to get more. Gotta eat some too, ya know.
And it's time to think about starting another round of five different ones. Once the weather warms, the ones under the lights now will move to the sunny front porch and the new ones will go under the lights. Yep, time to consult the seed list and ponder that a while.

Re: Started Some New (to me) Micros
I made my list of next micros to do and will start them Thursday or Friday.
Andrina - another 5-6" tall red one, maybe like Baby? I did find one reference that said 8-10". We'll see.
Aztek - an 8" tall gold
Inkspot - 12" tall, black @AKgardener, since you're growing this one now, does 12" tall sound right to you?
Vilma - 8" tall, red
Yellow Canary - 12" tall, yellow
