2022 MMMM if & when

A few people are already asking if it's going to happen, and when I'll start posting about it.

So the if - yes, it is on for 2022.

And, the when - I'l start a few threads (wish lists, spoiler alerts, new suggestions) very soon, perhaps today.

Tomorrow takes care of itself, although it's not yet known what that will be.

I participated against my better judgement and recieved far too many varieties. Because my daughter is becoming a tomatophile asking to start plants for her, we had about 200 plants hardening off on the garage apron this year. Counting a couple of micro's on the deck, I'm trying to keep up with 149 tomato plants, about 50 varieties.

I'm going to donate seed for a couple of varieties I particularly love, but may ask not to recieve any.

Oh, who am I kidding.

I would have to actually buy seeds to participate this year as my garden was poop. Plus with my husbands medical issues, I didn't get a lot of stuff planted and no blossoms bagged on what did grow.

I have 1 plant of Doukhobors in the garden. So far, I'm waiting on a flower to set. Three or 4 times I thought it was a goner prior to finally transplanting it.

One that I will likely share is a variety that came to me as "Parika". It came to America from East Africa, where it was brought from India.

There seems to be nothing on the internet about it, and near-spellings yield little.

The first cluster has 8 interestingly-shaped tomatoes about 4-6oz in size. None are ripe, but I'm hoping they are a high-solids canner.

Another is Martin's Super Roma, a determinate, striped Roma. This was my tribute to Martin Longseth (Paquebot) whom I got seeds from originally

Last spring I promised seeds to anyone that asked and a Canadian poster did. Unfortunately my seeds were either old or poorly-stored and germination was low. I promised more for next year.

I did get 7 out of 60, and 5 survivors.
75% of the tomatoes are a little larger than San Marzano, but some exceed 10 oz. To compare, I have Shere Khan and Marz Fire growing as well

Expect to see a few of these, as well. I may rename them to "Paquebot super Roma" with subscript "Martin's" The cluster in the image has 5; about average.

@eyolf Those are some very nice tomatoes and I am so glad that you got a few plants to fruitarian so that you can share the seeds. I understand you wanting to commemorate Martin but I really don't think that you should rename it. We have the curator of Martin's collection as a member here and I doubt that she will be renaming the seeds as well plus Martin shared these seeds with others as well. This means then that there will be two of the same variety with different names in circulation which is not a good idea at all. Named tomatoes should never have their names changed unless it is done by the person who named it.

@eyolf there's no need to apologize. It was very a nice gesture towards Martin and no harm has been done. I am here to teach not to berate everyone. This is a great learning experience for many others here too!

How about labeling them 'Super Roma' from Paquebot's collection?

I am in the same boat. My tomatoes are still 3 inches high. I don't know that i will get much crop before the deadline. Such a bad year.

@Tormato , would you like me to send seed of either of the Bowerbirds or Elbonian mudballs (north or South) for this year's MMMM or are they growing well enough for you to have sufficient seeds

Upthread I mentioned a new-to-me variety; "Parika"
Taste is subjective, of course; this one is "barely OK" in my garden. It looks like a small heart inside, and seems like most hearts...or maybe paste types...meaty and high solids
It will certainly fill canning jars or make sauce.

it is the ONLY winter squash they are growing this year after my high praise of it. it is doing very well in their garden.
i asked them to save seeds, lots of seeds.

it is the ONLY winter squash they are growing this year after my high praise of it. it is doing very well in their garden.
i asked them to save seeds, lots of seeds.

Sounds great. I think my last seeds of Scarchuks were from 2009. Since those are being grown in the far north, I wouldn't expect there to be an early harvest. With the time needed to dry down harvested seeds, I'll expect your package to arrive later than most (not including those procrastinators, who know who they are ).

Sherekhan was a new one to me, shared with the MMMM mailing. I planted 3; one in the main garden, one in what I call the "field garden" (edge of the hayfield, grows squash, cutting flowers, and some herbs) and a third in a homemade earthbox.

How meaty are the Sherekhan and what is the flavor? They look a bit like the Yellow Fire (aka Fire) that I grow for paste and fresh eating.

That's a nice display of paste tomatoes there. I'll have to show my son. He's trialing several different paste types this year.
