Hi everyone,

This is my first year growing edibles in Las Vegas and I have chosen to do it exclusively indoors. I have never grown tomatoes or had a home-grown tomato.

So far I have Black Krim and Green Zebra seedlings growing under LED lights that will eventually go into a grow tent and then next to a big west facing window. I already know this not optimal in every possible way but this is the way I want to try my first heirloom tomatoes. Now, what I’m REALLY excited for are the Rosella Purple, Dwarf Emerald Giant, and Adelaide Festival seeds coming in the mail tomorrow. I have a feeling I’ve signed up for a busy summer!

Welcome from Pennsylvania! We have many greenhouse growers here. How many hours of sunlight do you think the plants will have, by the west window? Also, you might want to invest in something to help pollinate your tomato flowers: an electric toothbrush is good, or a vegibee (I think I spelled that right) or whatever to vibrate those flowers to jostle the pollen in the absence of bees.

Welcome, it sounds like you are on a unique tomato adventure. Maybe start a thread in the Grow Logs to record all of your efforts. It's a nice way to keep a journal of what you have done and so you know what works and what doesn't. Some additional lighting may be something that you want to look into. Windows don't usually supply enough light on their own.

Welcome to the forum! Good luck in your venture! As noted, there are a bunch of indoor growers here, so you'll learn a lot. I can't help with indoor tomatoes - only herbs and greens here, which don't need as much light.

Wow, thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

I appreciate the tips, Nan and MissS! I'm fully expecting to provide supplemental light in the AM hours when there isn't direct sun coming in. For pollination, my sister's got a Sonicare toothbrush that I'm sure she won't mind me using for a few minutes a day.

SusieQ, whoops I "misspoke" in my post... It's actually a west-facing 8 ft tall sliding glass door that I plan to put the plants in front of, which is definitely much more light and space than a regular window.

Welcome! Sounds like you've done some good planning. I'm growing some indoor tomatoes for the first time in my life but they are the tiny ones just for something to do while waiting on our regular growing season. I will be interested in how your tomatoes do!

Welcome, my first year all I had was an east-facing spot next to the house. I had the entire yard torn up redoing everything, added about 30 yards of fill and built my raised beds. The plants were from a yahoo free ad and were yellow pears. Do it however you can and hope for the best.
