Patti's 2022 'Mater Adventure

I have grown some new to me tomatoes this year and I am keeping a log of them here. Unbagged seeds will be saved and sent into the Mostly Mystery Mater Mailing.

All of the plants got a late start due to me building some new boxes for them on my home property. I gave up my plot at the community gardens. The plants did not get in until June 20th. This soil is Purple Cow Manure mixed with peatmoss. I added bonemeal, bloodmeal, lime and some clay for minerals. The plants were planted on June 20th and a week later started to display herbicide damage from the soil. This was most likely due to the manure. It was not enough to be fatal but has affected the leaves through the entire growing process.

The first plant to set fruit in my Garden was Berg. This is a Pink fruited Potato leafed plant. It is also the first to be showing some color.

That's terrible about your soil. I hope it's something that eventually breaks down and goes away. That's a nice looking Berg.

Not a good ad for Purple Cow! Could too much blood meal affect the plants? Will be interested to hear what new ones you are growing and your opinions! Hope they all do well!

@Cornelius_Gotchberg I have some from various places but yes I think that this is Gardener's Supply Tomato Tower because they come in both green and red.

@MissS; yeah, old Gardener's Supply has a hook in me that won't ever let go.

Year and a half ago, I decided to get rid of all my smallish hoops and upgrade to the Tomato Towers.

The lovely and long suffering Mrs. Gotch and myself split all such purchases down the middle; I couldn't work up the nerve to tell her how much they cost, so I just funded them on my own.

You's only apologize for the price once, am I right? They are high quality, yet even with 53"/1.35 meters above ground, some of our plants (Sungold, SOTW, Opalka, Rose, and a few others) are soaring up-n-over that....and that's where my 7'/~2 meter stakes come in; started out last year with ten (10), yet ended up with 50.

Yes my plants always spill over the tops and that's okay with me. It doesn't seem to hurt my plants any. I am only 5'1" so that just helps to keep things within reach.

Yesterday the temperature were in the 90's. Polish Ellis is dropping lots of blossoms. That's okay cause there is plenty of fruit set already.

This plant is affected the most by the Glyphosate/herbicide. It is at the back where the water flows to so the chemicals are more concentrated or the plant is just more susceptible than the others.

Wow! Haven’t grown Marizol Bratka for several years. Your picture inspires me to maybe include it again next year! Seeds are from 2013 so should see how viable they are and save new ones!

Elbonian Puddle Duck F3 (working name)

This is a very productive RL Pink which has yet to be tasted. It was picked early due to rain in the forecast.

Elbonian Mudslinger (not stable) will produce PL (correct type) and RL seedlings. 2021 seed is from zendog, saved seed of a PL, who also had a few RL plants this year.

The origins go back to Wild Thyme, to Elgin Pink (which produces PL & RL versions, from what I've heard). Elbonian Mudslinger came from a PL plant of Elgin Pink (you were the seed source in 2014). And, that plant of Elgin Pink may not have been the true type (way too sweet, according to others' reports on flavor). Off-types originating with Wild Thyme are reported to be so exceptional, that I'll be keeping any RL seedlings.

I do believe that Elbonian Mudslinger (parent) is a black PL. Elbonian Puddle Duck is pink RL.

@MissS your tomato plant leaves are amazingly healthy and disease free for August! Care to share what your secret is?

@ddsack Thank you. It's been rather dry this year so the leaves have remained dry and not much funk has grown. I have one plant that had Early Blight but it resolved on it's own. I do have some white flies so I have sprayed my plants 3 times with Neem. That's about all that I have done. I do not ever spray fertilizers or feeds on my leaves. The only sprays that I ever use is to control something before it gets out of hand such as fungus or white flies. I have not really had any fungal issues this year at all other than that one plant.

What I did do different this year was to use Silica Blast while the plants were seedlings. These became very sturdy stocky plants to put out. I planted in a 50/50 mix of Purple Cow Manure and Peatmoss. The plants are having to deal with some herbicide residue in my soil. This does make the new growth curl but they do outgrow it and the leaves get rather thick. I do wonder if this has something to do with it.

I really think that we have had the perfect weather for growing tomatoes this year. I wish that I had planted Brandywine because it would have been awesome.

Heatherington Pink - A regular leafed Pink beefsteak which has very good production. My seed came from Tatianna.
