Camellia Time Is Starting
It's getting to be camellia time here in Georgia. For those who might not be familiar with Camellias, the sasanquas are the ones with small leaves and up to around 2" flowers. They start blooming right about mid October. The japonicas are the big ones with big leaves and flowers that can get up to 5" or so and the early varieties start blooming maybe late January or February. The color helps take the drabness out of winter down here in the South, especially if you have early, mid and late varieties of both kinds planted not to mention all the hybrids that have been developed. They're even working on development of some cold "tolerant" varieties that will push camellias a bit farther north but IMHO they aren't as pretty.
'Apple Blossom' was the first to bloom this fall in the back yard.

This is 'Leslie Ann' who just started a few days ago. She's similar in color to 'Apple Blossom' but has more pink .

It won't be long until 'Yuletide', a pretty red one with bright yellow stamens, will start too.
