Home Depot Deal on Fertilizer
I picked up five 2.5 pound containers, 2 of the 9-2-7 and 3 of the 7-6-9 for $3.88 or $4.05 each depending on which type of Miracle Gro granular Organics fertilizer. Normally, these cost $15-$18 each. Their bone meal and blood meal were also marked down a similar percentage, but, unfortunately, those were already cleaned out. I left several of the Miracle Gro containers on the shelves so as to not wipe them out for next guy.
I don’t see anything online about the deal, but if you are already at Home Depot it might be worth a look. I went in looking for blood meal, but the 9-2-7 has feather meal in it and that should work. I have a lot of sawdust and wood chips mixed in a spot I’m planting soon and want to counteract the nitrogen robbing effects of the wood. The wood decomposition should supply the necessary phosphorus.

And covid, or no covid. the fertilizer shelves are where I wear a mask, until the packages are in the cart and I'm walking away. I don't want to breath the spillings on those shelves.

I have been instructed by 2 different Pulmonologists, most recently at the Yale lung clinic, to stop using my favorite fertilizer because it contains bat guano. Even though it is liquid and watered in, not sprayed. They also don't like anything from birds. Including feathers. I am instructed I can feed the birds but NOT clean the feeders. Apparently these are known causes of lung diseases, not just because of bacteria or viruses but due to something called hypersensativity pneumonitis. So please protect yourselves.

Family friend who took over his father's hardware store in the 40's just turned 95 a few days ago. They built an empire by selling and delivering fertilizer to local farmers. Back in the day he filled sacks with bulk fertilizer with a shovel. Daylight to dark work to fulfill the demand of the thriving burley 'baccer industry.
I'm not that ancient in age, but I've played and helped with fertilizer since I could crawl, and at this point, I've eaten thousands of baloney sammiches with fertilizer on my hands.

Problem is, no one knows if they are one of the ones that will react to something. I balked at the fertilizer thing, but he said even if there is only a 1% chance, why take that chance? Of course, I already have lung problems. If you know someone that was not effected by it, must be fine. then.
Know any 95 year old smokers? I have known a few. Anyway, I don't tell anyone what to do and I don't intent to give up gardening, so I will just be a little more careful which fertilizers I pick. Everyone has a different risk tolerance. For every person that dresses up like they tell you to on the package and uses a respirator before spraying tomato plants, you will find someone doing it in bare feet, shorts and without any type of respiratory protection. I used to be the latter. I am not so cavalier any more when I head off to the garden with my portable oxygen.

Appreciate it, Gotch.
I have noticed in my life there aren't many, if any self-sufficient organic gardener's. I've seen a few pretenders on the internet, tho. So thank, God for pesticides and bulk fertilizer to feed em.

Re: Home Depot Deal on Fertilizer
The last time I bought bat guano, the product stated that it was collected from deposits that had accumulated for thousands of years. Dust of anything is bad for you, but I don't think a composted and aged product is the same as fresh bird poo. Chicken manure at the farm store is pretty stinky, but guanos tend to be more like compost. I'm sure your doctor understands medicine. My argument is only one of fertilizers.Sue_CT wrote: ↑Fri Nov 18, 2022 4:29 pm I have been instructed by 2 different Pulmonologists, most recently at the Yale lung clinic, to stop using my favorite fertilizer because it contains bat guano. Re: Home Depot Deal on Fertilizer
The problem with the bat guano is not just bacteria. I contacted the fertilizer company and they said no bacteria would be present with their process. Pulmonologist did not care, not interested in the bacteria or viruses might be in it, although two college students came down with a bat poop disease from a cave in Texas which has the largest bat cave in the world. The problem is probably in the proteins or something in it. It can cause something called Hypersensativity Pneumonitis. They believe my lungs are being damaged by a rare autoimmune disease, but they have not actually ruled out Hypersensativity Pneumonitis. I am going for a lung biopsy at Yale next month.
