Re: How's your weather?
We have an ice storm that has now turned into a snowstorm. All government buildings have been closed. A good day to order an extra large pizza and hunker down for another day.

Re: How's your weather?
-22°F, -30° C is colder than I’ve experienced. I believe -15° is the lowest I’ve personally been in. At what temperature can one throw a pot of boiling water into the air and it becomes ice crystals before it hits the ground? Seems like 107° F has been my high point. I was doing hard physical labor in that and very well remember the heat stress.
It wouldn’t be so bad to check the I’ve been in -50° F under a sky blazing with the aurora borealis box would it?

Re: How's your weather?
I have tried that throwing water in the air and it works in Connecticut, lol. At least it did about 6 years ago. I documented the temperature at the time when I posted a video of another nurse at work going outside the hospital and doing it while I taped it. I can't remember right now what the temperature was at the time. The "memory" recently came up on FB and I saw what I wrote about the temps but can't remember now. If I come across it again I will let you know.

Re: How's your weather?
-19 F is the coldest I've experienced for temperature, no windchill involved.
But the coldest I've ever felt. Well, one of them stories.
It was late summer, middle of September, when the first real cold weather can be expected. But, I forgot about expecting it. It was in the mid 70's late in the morning, 80s during the day. I was in a t-shirt, shorts, no socks and sneakers. I had a long day/night of cleaning and repairing things at the children's museum where I once volunteered. I worked until about midnight. Then it was a 40 minute walk home, as no car at the time. One step out the door and I found out it was about 30 degrees. I then realized that one exhibit was a dress-up area with old time clothes (think pre-WWII). I knew it wasn't out on display at that time of year, but there was a women's full length raccoon coat in storage. Should I wear it, or not? I figured with my luck, every friend I know in town would be driving by at midnight, laughing their you-know-what off at the sight of me. And, every police officer on duty would stop and question me.
You know by the second line above, the poor decision that I made. And, I was too stubborn to turn back and get the coat.

Weather here is forecast fine, fine and more fine with varying amounts of cloud. The half an inch or of rain has disappeared from the forecast

Re: How's your weather?
I love this kind of weather. Apparently, I timed my seeding of tomatoes and peppers well this year. Started cucumber seeds (for transplant) earlier this week and melons yesterday, same for marigolds and zinnias. I’m going to plant three more tomato starts in the bed on Friday and that will be it. 27 total tomatoes, 2 over my target ceiling. Oh well.

Re: How's your weather?
It was 81 yesterday afternoon and 68 this morning at 6:30. After checking my historical weather data, these mini heat spells happen every February and sometimes the same time frame during the month.
I also know that there will be some really cold spells (frost and possible freezes) in March sandwiched in between warm spells and sometimes one last cold kick in the butt around mid April. That's why I don't set out any tomatoes or peppers until the last week in April. I don't want to fool with scurrying around covering stuff as it's a pain in the butt. Somebody else can have the first tomato of the year.

73° is the forecast high for today - it was 47° just before 9 am, when I went to Aldi's, and when I got home around 9:30, it had already gotten up to 54°! Tomorrow, back down to 46°, then down to 37° on Saturday for a high, then back in the 50s on Sunday. Crazy weather!

I might direct seed some also since it’s being so warm. I need to get my cucumbers beds finish first, though. Plan is put the cucumbers in the in the ground bed, but amend native loamy clay/silt heavily with the reed sedge peat, a little perlite, sand, a little chicken manure and worm castings. The soil has already gotten a dose of organic matter and leaf litter. Nematodes can be an issue in this bed, but I plan to dilute their influence with plenty of organic matter as much as possible. I had french marigolds in the spot growing all summer and into the fall. By the time the nematodes get a firm foothold, the cucumbers will have already done their thing anyway. That’s my plan.Tormato wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 6:18 amWhat size of container for the cukes?karstopography wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 4:00 am F2721B75-54DC-42D6-AC92-1897D52DE308.jpeg

Re: How's your weather?
Record highs were set today at all three of our area airports; Dulles (80F) & National (81F) beat their old records by 3 degrees. All the flowers are trying to bloom a month early, weeds are popping up all over, and tree pollen is already high, high, high. Today the National Park Service announced we've reached green bud stage on the cherry blossoms on the National Mall, which normally means three to four weeks to peak bloom, but the high Saturday is predicted to be just 40F, and we may even see some snow flurries. Then a quick turnaround to back above normal, so it looks like the weather will be keeping the NPS blossom forecasters on their toes.

Re: How's your weather?
looks like the keweenaw got spared the brunt of todays storm.
we were looking at 8 to 12 inches of snow today, but ended up with 4 to 5 inches.
cold, and windy though, about 10 degrees. it looks like south of us got hit pretty good,
and closer to marquette. around 600,000 house holds lost power through out the state.
snow/ice combo i think. all ok here.
snow is still falling, but we made it through the day. thats all that counts.

Do you trellis your cukes? If so, you might plant some of the dwarfed or smaller marigolds on either side of the cuke rows or even mustard, though the mustard you would have to keep clipped back some.karstopography wrote: ↑Thu Feb 23, 2023 9:12 amI might direct seed some also since it’s being so warm. Ugh we are into some arctic air and it's hanging on for days according to the forecast. Temperature this morning -16C and windchill -28C. That's 3F and -18F. I am worried for my greenhouse greens. One day would not be a problem but four or more... I hope we get some sun in there.

Contact your local politicians and have a meeting in your greenhouse. They'll provide all the hot air needed.Bower wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 6:41 am Ugh we are into some arctic air and it's hanging on for days according to the forecast.
