First Hummer Of The Year

HUMMER! I forgot to mention that Monday afternoon the first hummer showed up at the front porch feeder. It was a little male and he just sat there and drank for the longest time. Poor little guy was hungry! I haven't seen any more but they're on the way. Glad I've been stocking up on sugar when it's on sale.

The hummers usually show up around the 18th-22nd of March every year like clockwork. The feeders have been up since the 15th. There's one on the front porch so we can see first arrivals through the window and there's another in the back yard. Eventually the porch feeder will move to the back too. It would make too much mess on my plant tables if it stayed there!

WoW! That's exciting! I won't put my feeder up for a while. I have a note that April 23rd was the first hummer I saw feed in 2021 and again in 2023 (no note from 2022). I used to have a website to track sightings - will have to go look for it again. I have my feeder hanging right outside my kitchen sink - just love watching them!

@CrazyAboutOrchids, here's the one I'm using now: https://hummingbirdcentral.com/hummingb ... 24-map.htm

You can look at the 2023 map there to see when they came to your area. Zoom in over your state, click on any hummer symbol and it will give you the town name and date of that reporting.

It says April 14,2023 for New England and the first I actually saw at my feeder was April 23, 2023. Right now I am thinking I will put my feeder up the weekend of April 14, but will keep an eye on sightings.

Normally our first hint is the cats sitting on the counter staring at the window. They normally stay off, but the first few weeks of hummer activity, all rules are ignored.

I thought I saw a hummer yesterday, been sightings all around me. Today I had my first at the feeder; a day early from 2021 and 2023.

I usually get my first hummingbird about May 10th. I have always thought that they arrive when the dandelions start to bloom. Well this has been such a weird spring that the dandelions are already blooming. There aren't any birds here yet so that has knocked that notion out the door for me. I do think that they will arrive earlier than normal with everything blooming earlier.

We are waiting patiently for both hummers and Baltimore and orchard orioles. Keep me posted where they are.

This year has been strange so far with the hummers. Once the first one shows up we usually get a bunch shortly after that hang around before they leave to head further north. Then there's about a four week period with minimal hummers before the all-summer crowd comes in and stays until September. We haven't seen the first batch yet. That's really strange. It's never happened before.
