Great fragrance those lilacs. Pretty to look at.

Re: Lilac Season
end of the month here.
there are bushes at the end of the barn that are 15-20 ft high. purple mostly, and a white one too.
you can tell when they are blooming. i have always liked them. we have them growing wild and unattended
in many areas where homes used to be, but no longer are. the lilacs remain, year after year.

Re: Lilac Season
How far south can Lilacs be successfully grown without heroic measures? I have wondered at below what latitude is the no go zone.
I do remember that Lilacs in Massachusetts didn’t like hot weather and wilted some during the inevitable annual summer heat waves. But, is it the heat of summer or the lack of chill hours/dormancy that prevents Lilacs from being grown in hotter areas?
Do lilacs thrive in the cool Pacific Ocean coastal climates like found on the Monterrey Peninsula of California or general San Francisco Bay area?

I think it's more of a Hardiness Zone deal: https://www.almanac.com/plant/lilacs#:~ ... to%20white.karstopography wrote: ↑Fri May 03, 2024 7:50 pm How far south can Lilacs be successfully grown without heroic measures? I have wondered at below what latitude is the no go zone.

Re: Lilac Season
You can grow lilacs here. They have short chill hour versions. People have them. There is even a major grower by Watsonville that supplies the area. They just are not that common.
Lilacs are my favorite flower.

Re: Lilac Season
This was likely the shortest and most disappointing season ever, here, for that special fragrance. It rained quite a bit when they were in bloom, the bloom which has now just ended. I hope that I can find the time, soon, to clip out the spent flowers, so that the bushes can put more energy into this year's branch growth.
