Deep Root Paks?
I need to buy some new 1020 pak inserts, and I've always liked the #804 inserts (8 paks of 4 cells each). But my local garden center supplier no longer carries them. They are going to smaller and smaller cells to help control their costs. So I'm shopping online at the Greenhouse Megastore. They have traditional 804 and they also have a 606 (slightly smaller cells, but nearly an inch deeper).
So are the deeper cells of any real value to the home gardener? I always transplant to -at least- a 3-1/2" square pot. On my early tomatoes, I'll transplant again to a 6" or 8" pot. So what do you think? Any fans here of the deep paks?

I am; In the fall, I leave the tomatoes in the 606 cells and direct plant from there. Also did the same with broccoli and let it get really rootbound before transplanting and broccoli heads formed quickly and the size was the same. Saved a lot on watering.
I got mine at Greenhouse Megastore and try to use them for a couple of seasons. When I tried others that were advertised as deep, they were a disappointment.

I'm another fan of deep packs. I get mine from Jung. They call them "deep cell inserts". Each tray insert has six packs of six cells each. Cells are 2-1/4" x 2" x 3 -1/4" deep. I've used them for ages, get nice root growth in them and haven't found the 3 1/4" deep cells anywhere else.

Yeah, I always get the deep ones, too. Plants can go longer between waterings.

Are the ones that you got from Jung designed to "snap apart?" I can't tell from their photo.GoDawgs wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 2:14 pm I'm another fan of deep packs. I get mine from Jung. I did a quick check, and these #606 sections look like they will fit well into my medium (apx 7.5" X 11.5") Permanest trays. Some of mine are nearly 50 years old, so while a bit expensive, they have lasted well. I bought mine at Park, but I see the current owners still carry them.

Yes, they do. Sometimes I cheat if I need just a 2-pack for something by carefully cutting off two joined cells with fingernail scissors, making a 2-pack and 4-pack.Greatgardens wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 6:46 am Are the ones that you got from Jung designed to "snap apart?" I ended up ordering a bunch from the Greenhouse Megastore since I needed some trays and pots, also. They really have quite a wide selection, don't they.

Received the shipment, and I'm very impressed with the quality of the paks. These are some of the sturdiest that I've seen. Anyone tried putting these in the dishwasher? OTOH, I bought a bunch of them, but they appear sturdy enough to re-use several times.
